Abstract
To improve the sensitivity of trace element determinations in biological samples by instrumental neutron activation analysis, a modified anticompton spectrometer was constructed which operates with a well-type Ge(Li) diode as the primary detector. To absorb the compton scattered gamma rays the central detector is surrounded by two cylindrical NaI(Tl) crystals (8″ dia × 4″ ht). Each of these crystals has a 1.5″ radius semi-circular slot cut in its face to provide optimum design of the multicrystal device. The performance of the spectrometer is specified by the Y-88 figure of merit for 1 cc gamma sources: 20.4 at 122 keV, 4.0 at 662 keV, and 2.9 at 1332 keV.
The operation of the spectrometer in the coincidence mode results in a significant suppression of the bremsstrahlung background, a fact highly advantageous in the analysis of phosphorus-rich biological material. In the analysis of blood serum, for e.g., the background produced by P-32 can be reduced by a factor of 28.4 at 136 keV. Thus it was possible to improve the detection limit by a factor of 5 in the determination of selenium via the 136 keV gamma rays from Se-75 when compared with the conventional measurement at cap of a single large coaxial Ge(Li)-detector.
