Summary
When the copper(II)-EGTA complex is polarographically reduced without an excess of the ligand, strontium and barium ions give a new wave at a more positive potential. The limiting currents of the new waves are proportional to the strontium and barium ion concentrations, respectively. Magnesium ion shows only a very poorly developed wave. The reduction of copper(II)-EDTA chelate in the presence of alkaline earth metal ions is different; in this case the substitution reduction wave is only slightly separated from the main wave.
