Diffusion chromizing of graphite powders in a closed reaction volume

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Chromium carbide coatings of high quality have been obtained by using the principle of mixing the graphite powder to be coated with chromium particles with a supply of NH4Br, in a closed reaction volume.

  2. 2.

    Chemical transport of chromium to graphite powders are effected in a closed reaction volume from chromium particles, and a layer of carbides was grown on the powders by diffusion kinetics. The maximum depth of the chromium carbide coating at a process duration of 90 min was 27μ. The presence of hydrogen intensified the process.

  3. 3.

    Compared with impregnation in a stream of bromides, chromizing graphite powders in a closed reaction volume reduces chromium consumption and increases the yield of the apparatus.
