All change in the Arctic

Variability in the Arctic has long seemed to have some especial involvement in global change; polar amplification and feedback are recurrent themes in numerical climate modelling1. But we have lacked knowledge of the mechanisms supposed to underpin this link, and (with exceptions such as a 20-year dataset provided by Arctic drifting buoys) have lacked many of the ocean time-series necessary to demonstrate the fact or character of change in Arctic waters. During the 1990s continual progress has been made in tackling these deficiencies, with the latest assessment emerging at the American Geophysical Union Fall MeetingFootnote 1 last year.
