Abstract
This article gives a short outline of the main trends in investigations on the metallography of the nuclear fuels — plutonium, uranium and their alloys-being carried out in the USSR in connection with the creation and development of atomic energy.
In addition to summarizing the properties of plutonium metal, the first section includes the rules governing the reactions of plutonium with other elements in relation to their position in the periodic table.
A series of the properties of uranium and its behavior under cyclic heat-treatment and irradiation in relation to the alloying and thermal and mechanical processes used are examined in the second section. Pressure processing of uranium is likewise discussed.
The third section deals with the effect of neutron radiation on the structure and properties of the metals and alloys.
