Abstract
THE possibility of a human embryonic haemoglobin was first indicated by the work of Drescher and Kunzer1. Two such haemoglobins, Hb-Grower 1 and Hb-Gower 2, have been discovered2,3 and their structures are ɛ4 and α2ɛ2 respectively. The ɛ-chain is a distinct haemoglobin chain synthesized during embryonic development. It has therefore been suggested4 that there is a separate genetic locus determining the structure of the ɛ-chain, just as there are separate loci determining the structure of the α, β, γ, and δ-haemoglobin chains5.
