As supervisors of research students, and as past organizers of two one-day conferences of The Institute of Physics, we wish to support the issue raised by J C Scott in his recent letter about meeting charges for student members and to question very strongly a large number of the assertions and conclusions made by the Executive Secretary in his reply. There are really two issues.
