Abstract

This book contains collected papers presented at the 9th International Symposium on Ultrafast Processes in Spectroscopy. This symposium was previously held in the former USSR and eastern European countries, mainly East Germany. From the 8th Symposium, it was also held in western Europe. Although the major participants are from these countries, in this conference more than twenty countries attended, including the USA, Canada, Japan and many European countries. The quality of the conference has been much improved and now comes very close to that of its counterpart conference, `Ultrafast Phenomena', held in the western world. `Ultrafast Spectroscopy' is a more basic-science oriented conference as the name suggests. However, it covers the very broad subject of ultrafast spectroscopy because of the high degree of applicability of the technique. The subjects studied are ultrafast pulsed lasers, generation and measurements, atoms and molecules, semiconductors, nonlinear optics, intense ultrashort pulses, frequency conversion, organic molecular and polymer systems, quantum confined systems, metals and insulators, optoelectronics, terahertz radiation and others.

There are five-page abstracts for invited papers and four-page abstracts for contributed papers. Many of the papers offer good perspectives of the relevant subjects studied. There are several very interesting papers from the eastern European countries, which are not very well known to the readers in the western world. There are also several papers by famous western leading scientists.
