Abstract

The pair distribution function for isotropic molecules in a liquid is perturbed by the application of an external electric field. This anisotropy causes a pseudo-hyperpolarizability and results in an induced double refraction. Numerical results are given for carbon tetrachloride and liquid argon, the former showing reasonable agreement with experimental values.
