The Helium Anomaly in ø Persei.
Abstract
All available velocity measures from the helium singlet (X 3965) and triplet (X 4026 and X 4471) lines in the spectrum of ~ Persei are gathered and discussed. The previously announced anomalous behavior of the triplet lines is corroborated by new observational material and by heretofore unpublished meas- ures by Jordan. The triplet lines are shown to be composite and the velocity-curve from the major com- ponent to be complex, one part corresponding to the phase of great enhancement of the he'Iium lines (45-70 days) and the other to the rest of the cycle of 126.696 days, during which time the lines are much fainter and of different character. Both parts differ from the velocity-curves of the Balmer lines and of Be X 3965. Probable errors of the triplet-line measures during the weak phase are small and indicate that the velocity-curve obtained from them is entitled to de~nite weight in the general problem of 4) Persei
