Star counts in Puppis and Vela.
Abstract
Star counts between magnitudes 9 and 13 have been made for the region 1 = 1950 to 2300, b = 0 to $ 0 The instrument used was the -inch Ross camera, with Selected Area 123 serving as standard. The work is now being extended to 14.5 mag. with the aid of long exposure plates with the -inch, and, for a few selected fields, to magnitude 17 or i8 with the aid of short exposure plates to be taken with the Schmidt camera. The Schmidt will also be used for the strengthening of the magnitude system. An inspection of the field reveals the existence of an interlocking system of dark nebulae at galactic latitudes - 10 to 30 This system of dark nebulae has its beginning at the dark nebula near Sirius, and is readily traced in the counts or on the long exposure plates. A photograph with the Schmidt shows nicely the bright nebulosity associated with the dark nebula near Sirius. At galactic longitude 2250, in Vela, these dark nebulae spread to northern galactic latitudes. National A strophysical Observatory, Tonanzintla, Mexico.
