Abstract

A direct measurement of the ML- and LK-orbital electron-capture ratios in the decay of Cd109 was carried out by using a gaseous radioactive source of Cd109 (CH3)2 in a multiwire proportional counter with internal anticoincidence. The experiments yielded the following values of the orbital electron-capture probability ratios: PMPL=0.232±0.020, PL+M+PK=0.332±0.015, and PLPK=0.237±0.015. From the PLPK value, the transition energy for capture to the 88-keV (72+) state in Ag109 was found to be QEC=803+7 keV by application of the theory. The experimental ML-capture ratio is in excellent agreement with the exchange-corrected theoretical result extrapolated from Bahcall (0.230) and with the theoretical results of Robinson.
