Determination of characteristics of the proneness of loess soils to slump-type settlement

  • Discussion of Construction Rules and Regulations
  • Published:
Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

Various approaches to assessment of the relative proneness of soil to Slump-type settlement is examined. In deformation calculations, it is proposed to use the structural strength of the wetted soil in lieu of the pressure initiating slump-type settlement. It is emphasized that the relative proneness of soil to slump-type settlement should be determined under conditions whereby it is wetted with water or solutions corresponding in terms of temperature and chemical composition to the liquid circulating in utilities laid for the entity.

Attention readers!

You are invited to participate in a discussion of the paper presented by A. M. Dzagov, which is devoted to evaluation of characteristics of the proneness of loess soils to slump-type settlement. Expert conclusions drawn by official critics of this paper, and also discussion of its materials at a meeting of the editorial staff have exposed diametrically opposite assessments of leading specialists in this field with respect to its basic positions, which touch upon, among other things, criteria of the proneness of soils to slump-type settlement, and possibility of conversion to a structural-strength parameter. As a result, the editorial staff has decided to publish the paper in the author's version in order of discussion. We look forward to your active participation in the discussion, taking into account the principal character of the questions posed by the author.
