Abstract
Characteristic features of a method of compacting soils prone to slump-type settlement by wetting the slump-prone stratum via drainage trenches and tamping are addressed; this makes it possible to lower significantly the cost of, and time required for bed preparation. Relationships are derived and practical recommendations given for use of the method.
