Summary

Three different astronomical problems are treated in some detail: (1) the measuring of a stellar parallax, (2) the structure of the stellar system, and (3) the world of the extraglactic nebulæ.

The development of observational skill is sketched starting in the first problem from observations ofTycho and culminating in the work ofBessel. The construction of large reflecting telescopes has been much influenced by the second problem. In this connection the work ofKapteyn is mentioned and the difficulties arising from interstellar absorption are treated. Great photometric skill is needed to surmount the difficulties. The same is true of the solution of the third problem. Here the work ofHubble andBaade on the resolution of spiral nebulæ and also the Mt. Wilson work on the red shift of the nebulæ is treated. An outlook is given on the Hale telescope on Palomar Mountain and on some problems that may be solved with it.
