Quantum computing (QC) has opened the door to advancements in machine learning (ML) tasks that are currently implemented in the classical domain. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are classical ML architectures that exploit data locality and possess a simpler structure than a fully connected multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) without compromising the accuracy of classification. However, the concept of preserving data locality is usually overlooked in the existing quantum counterparts of CNNs, particularly for extracting multifeatures in multidimensional data. In this paper, we present an multidimensional quantum convolutional classifier (MQCC) that performs multidimensional and multifeature quantum convolution with average and Euclidean pooling, thus adapting the CNN structure to a variational quantum algorithm (VQA). The experimental work was conducted using multidimensional data to validate the correctness and demonstrate the scalability of the proposed method utilizing both noisy and noise-free quantum simulations. We evaluated the MQCC model with reference to reported work on state-of-the-art quantum simulators from IBM Quantum and Xanadu using a variety of standard ML datasets. The experimental results show the favorable characteristics of our proposed techniques compared with existing work with respect to a number of quantitative metrics, such as the number of training parameters, cross-entropy loss, classification accuracy, circuit depth, and quantum gate count. Dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators (DBD-PAs) have the potential to improve the performance of fluid machineries such as aircrafts and wind turbines by preventing flow separation. In this study, to identify the multiple flow control mechanisms in high Reynolds number flow, parametric experiments for an actuation parameter F+ with a wide range of Re values (105–106) for NACA0015 airfoil was conducted. We conducted wind tunnel tests by applying a DBD-PA to the flow field around a wing model at the leading edge. Lift characteristics, turbulent kinetic energy in the flow field, shear layer height, and the separation point of the boundary layer were evaluated based on pressure distributions on the wing surface and velocity of the flow field, with the effect of DBD-PA on the post-stall flow around the wing and the mechanism behind the increase in the lift coefficient CL analyzed based on these evaluation results. The following phenomena contributed to the increase in CL: (1) increase in turbulent kinetic energy; (2) increase in circulation; and (3) acceleration of the flow near the leading edge. Thus, this study effectively investigated the dependence of the increase in lift on F+ and the lift-increasing mechanism for a wide range of Re values. Full article

(1) Background and Objectives: This review aims to identify the latest literature on the possible effect of bilingualism on the linguistic skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) residing in Greece. (2) Materials and Methods: The literature was searched in the databases of Scopus and PubMed by selecting articles and by reviewing four studies published in peer-reviewed journals. This Scoping Review is based on the standards of PRISMA recommendations for scoping reviews, while the PCC framework was used as a guide to construct clear and meaningful objectives and eligibility criteria. (3) Results: The publications included in the review addressed a variety of language-related skills, including morphology, the syntax–pragmatics interface, narrative ability, as well as both receptive and expressive language skills. (4) Conclusions: Three out of four studies provide evidence that bilingual ASD children are not disadvantaged compared to monolingual peers but rather enjoy some benefits, to a certain extent, due to bilingualism. However, the number of the reviewed studies as well as the limitations of the studies themselves render this conclusion tentative. Additionally, the findings set guidelines that speech therapists, educators, psychologists, and doctors in the Greek context need to follow when treating or educating bilingual children with ASD. Background and objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical–pathological profile in young patients with thyroid cancer. Materials and methods: We realized a retrospective study on patients with thyroid neoplasms who underwent surgery at the “Pius Brinzeu” County Clinical Emergency Hospital in Timisoara, Romania. A comparative analysis of some parameters between two groups, young patients (<45 years) versus patients ≥45 years, was performed. Results: A total of 211 patients met the study inclusion criteria, mostly females (86.26%) with a female/male ratio of 6.81:1. In patients <45 years old (25.64%), papillary thyroid carcinoma was identified in 51.85% of cases; in 53.85% of cases, the tumor was >1 cm; 13.46% had extrathyroidal extension (p = 0.0430); 21.15% capsule invasion (p = 0.1756); 23.08% lympho-vascular invasion (p = 0.0048); and 13.46% of cases locoregional nodal invasion (p = 0.0092). Conclusion: Thyroid cancer in young people was associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis and tumor progression parameters, identifying more cases of extrathyroidal extension, locoregional nodal invasion, lympho-vascular invasion and perineural invasion in young patients compared to older ones. For a better understanding of this pathology and to improve diagnosis and therapeutic management, more studies are needed for these patients. Full article

Drugged driving, the act of driving a vehicle under the influence of illicit drugs, by adolescents is a serious public health concern. Many factors contribute to this risk behavior, but much less is known regarding the role of parenting behaviors in this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to examine specific parenting behaviors and their influence among a nationally representative sample of adolescents. Pooled data from the 2016–2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) among 17,520 adolescents ages 16–17 years old were analyzed. Differences were found in specific parenting behaviors and adolescent drugged/drunk driving, with parents not checking homework and not telling their children they are proud of them being the most influential. Findings from the present study may inform drugged driving prevention programs for parents and adolescents and enhance road safety interventions. Full article

Leptosphaerulina leaf spot, caused by Leptosphaerulina trifolii, is a major disease of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), leading to noticeable losses. From 2022 to 2023, we collected samples of alfalfa with symptoms of the disease from different locations in Inner Mongolia, China. Nine fungal isolates recovered from these samples were identified through morphological traits and a maximum likelihood phylogeny based on concatenated partial sequences of ITS, 28S, and rpb2. A pathogenicity test on alfalfa confirmed the pathogenicity of the isolates on alfalfa. Analysis of physiological traits of L. trifolii revealed optimal mycelium growth at 20 °C and a pH range of 5 to 7, with soluble starch as the preferred carbon source and yeast extract as the optimal nitrogen source. The pathogen thrived in V8-juice agar and oat agar media. This study confirms L. trifolii as the causative agent of Leptosphaerulina leaf spot of alfalfa in Inner Mongolia and provides valuable insights into its optimal growth conditions. These findings enhance the understanding and management of this disease in alfalfa fields. Full article

Apples are usually bagged during the growing process, which can effectively improve the quality. Establishing an in situ nondestructive testing model for in-tree apples is very important for fruit companies in selecting raw apple materials for valuation. Low-maturity apples and high-maturity apples were acquired separately by a handheld tester for the internal quality assessment of apples developed by our group, and the effects of the two maturity levels on the soluble solids content (SSC) detection of apples were compared. Four feature selection algorithms, like ant colony optimization (ACO), were used to reduce the spectral complexity and improve the apple SSC detection accuracy. The comparison showed that the diffuse reflectance spectra of high-maturity apples better reflected the internal SSC information of the apples. The diffuse reflectance spectra of the high-maturity apples combined with the ACO algorithm achieved the best results for SSC prediction, with a prediction correlation coefficient (Rp) of 0.88, a root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.5678 °Brix, and a residual prediction deviation (RPD) value of 2.466. Additionally, the fruit maturity was predicted using PLS-LDA based on color data, achieveing accuracies of 99.03% and 99.35% for low- and high-maturity fruits, respectively. These results suggest that in-tree apple in situ detection has great potential to enable improved robustness and accuracy in modeling apple quality. Full article

Treatment of IgE-mediated food allergy involves avoiding the food causing the allergic reaction. In association, an action plan for allergic reactions is indicated, sometimes including self-injectable adrenaline. In addition to these dietary and medical implications, there are two equally important ones: nutritional and psychosocial. From a nutritional point of view, it is known that children suffering from food allergy have a growth delay in height and weight compared to their non-allergic peers. Specifically, this condition is directly related to the specific food excluded from the diet, the number of foods excluded and the duration of the elimination diet. From a psychosocial point of view, the child often cannot eat the foods other guests eat. Children with food allergy may perceive an aura of parental anxiety around their mealtime and may be afraid that what they eat could have harmful consequences for their health. Furthermore, children’s and their parents’ quality of life appears to be affected. The need to manage the allergy and the nutritional and psychosocial problems positions the pediatric nutritionist and the child neuropsychiatrist as support figures for the pediatric allergist in managing the child with food allergy. Validation of Dynamic Natural Ventilation Protocols for Optimal Indoor Air Quality and Thermal Adaptive Comfort during the Winter Season in Subtropical-Climate School Buildings

The need for energy-efficient buildings must be based on strong effective passive-design techniques, which coordinate indoor air quality and thermal comfort. This research describes the principles, simulation, implementation, and monitoring of two different natural cross-ventilation algorithm scenarios applied to a school-building case study affected by a subtropical climate during the winter season. These ventilation protocols, the steady and dynamic versions, can control the carbon dioxide concentration and actuate the window openings according to pre-defined window-to-wall ratios. The implementation of the monitoring process during three non-consecutive days in the winter of 2021 validates the opening strategy to maintain carbon dioxide below 800 ppm, described by the protocol Hygiene Measures Against COVID-19, and the temperature within the comfort ranges suggested by the adaptive UNE-EN 16798. The study shows that a steady opening of 2.16% window-to-wall equivalent ratio can be enough to maintain the requested comfort and carbon dioxide conditions. The use of the dynamic window ratios, from 0.23% to 2.16%, modified according to the measured carbon dioxide concentration, can partially maintain the carbon dioxide below the required limits for ASHRAE 62.1, Hygiene Measures Against COVID-19 and UNE-EN 16798 between 48.28% to 74.14% of the time. However, the carbon dioxide limit proposed by RITE, 500 ppm, is only achieved for 15.52% of the time, which demonstrates the inadequacy of the natural ventilation to fulfil the standard. Further improvements in the dynamic control of the openings in these buildings could lead to lower carbon dioxide concentrations while maintaining the thermal comfort in mild winter climates. Biomedical information retrieval for diagnosis, treatment and prognosis has been studied for a long time. In particular, image recognition using deep learning has been shown to be very effective for cancers and diseases. In these fields, scaphoid fracture recognition is a hot topic because the appearance of scaphoid fractures is not easy to detect. Although there have been a number of recent studies on this topic, no studies focused their attention on surgical treatment recommendations and nonsurgical prognosis status classification. Indeed, a successful treatment recommendation will assist the doctor in selecting an effective treatment, and the prognosis status classification will help a radiologist recognize the image more efficiently. For these purposes, in this paper, we propose potential solutions through a comprehensive empirical study assessing the effectiveness of recent deep learning techniques on surgical treatment recommendation and nonsurgical prognosis status classification. In the proposed system, the scaphoid is firstly segmented from an unknown X-ray image. Next, for surgical treatment recommendation, the fractures are further filtered and recognized. According to the recognition result, the surgical treatment recommendation is generated. Finally, even without sufficient fracture information, the doctor can still make an effective decision to opt for surgery or not. Moreover, for nonsurgical patients, the current prognosis status of avascular necrosis, non-union and union can be classified. The related experimental results made using a real dataset reveal that the surgical treatment recommendation reached 80% and 86% in accuracy and AUC (Area Under the Curve), respectively, while the nonsurgical prognosis status classification reached 91% and 96%, respectively. Further, the methods using transfer learning and data augmentation can bring out obvious improvements, which, on average, reached 21.9%, 28.9% and 5.6%, 7.8% for surgical treatment recommendations and nonsurgical prognosis image classification, respectively. Based on the experimental results, the recommended methods in this paper are DenseNet169 and ResNet50 for surgical treatment recommendation and nonsurgical prognosis status classification, respectively. We believe that this paper can provide an important reference for future research on surgical treatment recommendation and nonsurgical prognosis classification for scaphoid fractures. Full article

Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques are based on either subtractive (milling prefabricated blocks) or additive (3D printing) methods, and both are used for obtaining dentistry materials. Our in vitro study aimed to investigate the behavior of human gingival fibroblasts exposed to methacrylate (MA)-based CAD/CAM milled samples in comparison with that of MA-based 3D-printed samples to better elucidate the mechanisms of cell adaptability and survival. The proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts was measured after 2 and 24 h of incubation in the presence of these samples using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, and the membrane integrity was assessed through the lactate dehydrogenase release. The level of reactive oxygen species, expression of autophagy-related protein LC3B-I, and detection of GSH and caspase 3/7 were evaluated by fluorescence staining. The MMP-2 levels were measured using a Milliplex MAP kit. The incubation with MA-based 3D-printed samples significantly reduced the viability, by 16% and 28% from control after 2 and 24 h, respectively. There was a 25% and 55% decrease in the GSH level from control after 24 h of incubation with the CAD/CAM milled and 3D-printed samples, respectively. In addition, higher levels of LC3B-I and MMP-2 were obtained after 24 h of incubation with the MA-based 3D samples compared to the CAD/CAM milled ones. Therefore, our results outline that the MA-CAD/CAM milled samples displayed good biocompatibility during 24-h exposure, while MA-3D resins are proper for short-term utilization (less than 24 h). TI–6AL–4V alloys are widely used in various fields owing to their excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, and low-temperature toughness. Herein, a microgroove fixture was used to simulate the microgrooves in a titanium alloy with different aspect ratios to study the influence of the electrolyte flow rate on the polishing effect. The optimization of the electrochemical polishing parameters was conducted using experiments and simulations. The effects of process parameters, such as the concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2), polishing time, and processing voltage, on the quality of the post-polished surface were studied. Experiments were conducted on microgrooves with different aspect ratios under the optimized polishing process parameters. Changes in the surface elements of the microgrooves after polishing were detected. The experimental results indicated that the optimal electrochemical polishing solution flow rate, NaCl concentration, ZnCl2 concentration, polishing time, and processing voltage were 0.2 m/s, 4.0 wt.%, 0.4 wt.%, 8 min, and 90 V, respectively. After 8 min of electrochemical polishing, a TiO2 passivation film was formed on the surface of the microgroove. The surface roughness of the notch and bottom of the microgroove decreased from 250 nm to below 40 nm, with a minimum of 24.5 nm. Full article

In recent years, the global reduction in populations of the Apis mellifera species has generated a worrying deterioration in the production of essential foods for human consumption. This phenomenon threatens food security, as it reduces the pollination of vital crops, negatively affecting the health and stability of ecosystems. The three main factors generating the loss of the bee population are industrial agriculture, climate changes, and infectious diseases, mainly those of parasitic origin, such as the Varroa destructor mite. This article proposes an IoT system that uses accessible, efficient, low-cost devices for beekeepers in developing countries to monitor hives based on temperature, humidity, CO2, and TVOC. The proposed solution incorporates nine-feature aggregation as a data preprocessing strategy to reduce redundancy and efficiently manage data storage on hardware with limited capabilities, which, combined with a machine learning model, improves mite detection. Finally, an evaluation of the energy consumption of the solution in each of its nodes, an analysis of the data traffic injected into the network, an assessment of the energy consumption of each implemented classification model, and, finally, a validation of the solution with experts is presented. The recent evolution in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) targeted therapies led to a progressive change in the way clinicians manage the goals of treatment and evaluate the response to treatment in respect to the paradigm of the chemoimmunotherapy era. Continuous therapies with BTK inhibitors achieve prolonged and sustained control of the disease. On the other hand, venetoclax and anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies or, more recently, ibrutinib plus venetoclax combinations, given for a fixed duration, achieve undetectable measurable residual disease (uMRD) in the vast majority of patients. On these grounds, a time-limited MRD-driven strategy, a previously unexplored scenario in CLL, is being attempted. On the other side of the spectrum, novel genetic and non-genetic mechanisms of resistance to targeted treatments are emerging. Here we review the response assessment criteria, the evolution and clinical application of MRD analysis and the mechanisms of resistance according to the novel treatment strategies within clinical trials. The extent to which this novel evidence will translate in the real-life management of CLL patients remains an open issue to be addressed. Full article

These findings enrich the genetic framework associated with B. cinerea’s pathogenicity and ecological adaptation, offering insights into uncharted metabolic pathways. Significantly, the discovery of previously unannotated genes provides new molecular targets for developing targeted antifungal strategies, promising to enhance crop protection and advance our understanding of fungal biochemistry. This research not only broadens the scope of known secondary metabolites but also opens avenues for future exploration into B. cinerea’s biosynthetic capabilities, potentially leading to novel antifungal compounds. Background and Objectives: The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate and compare the long-term clinical outcomes of immediate implants placed into fresh sockets with and without periapical pathology. Materials and Methods: After the search and review of the literature in the electronic databases, 109 publications were achieved. The titles and abstracts of 66 publications were screened. After the evaluation of the full text of 22 publications, based on the inclusion criteria, six controlled clinical studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Results: The statistical calculation showed no heterogeneity among the studies included. The implant survival was 99.6% in the test (socket with periapical pathology) and control (socket without periapical pathology) groups of all the clinical trials. The results of the meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference between test and control groups regarding the marginal bone level and the width of keratinized mucosa in all the studies. Other parameters indicating plaque level, bleeding on probing, and gingival recession also did not differ between test and control groups at the final follow-up in nearly all studies. Conclusions: Within the limitation of this systemic review and meta-analysis, the obtained data suggest that implants immediately placed into the extraction sockets of teeth exhibiting periapical pathology can be successfully osseointegrated for an extended period. Currently, new clean energy storage technology must be effective, affordable, and ecologically friendly so as to meet the diverse and sustainable needs of the energy supply. In this work, NiCo-LDH containing intercalated EG was successfully prepared within 210 s using an ultrafast microwave radiation technique. Subsequently, a series of characterization and systematic electrochemical tests were conducted to analyze the composition, structure, and energy storage mechanism of the NiCo-LDH material. The Ni:Co ratio of 5:5 results in the highest capacitance value of 2156 F/g at 1 A/g and an outstanding rate performance of 86.8% capacity retention rate at 10 A/g. The results demonstrated that the unique porous structure of NiCo-LDH and large layer spacing were conducive to more electrochemical reactions. Additionally, an electrochemical test was carried out on the NiCo-LDH as a hybrid supercapacitor electrode material, with NiCo-LDH-5:5 serving as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, the asymmetric supercapacitor can achieve a maximum energy density of 82.5 Wh kg−1 and power density of 8000 W kg−1. The NiCo-LDH-5:5//AC hybrid supercapacitors own 81.5% cycle stability and 100% coulombic efficiency after 6000 cycles at 10 A/g. Full article

Urban land use provides essential information about how land is utilized within cities, which is critical for land planning, urban renewal, and early warnings for natural disasters. Although existing studies have utilized multi-source perception data to acquire land use information quickly and at low cost, and some have integrated urban morphological indicators to aid in land use identification, there is still a lack of systematic discussion in the literature regarding the potential of three-dimensional urban morphology to enhance identification effectiveness. Therefore, this paper aims to explore how urban three-dimensional morphology can be used to improve the identification of urban land use types. This study presents an innovative approach called the UMH–LUC model to enhance the accuracy of urban land use identification. The model first conducts a preliminary classification using points of interest (POI) data. It then improves the results with a dynamic reclassification based on floor area ratio (FAR) measurements and a variance reclassification using area and perimeter metrics. These methodologies leverage key urban morphological features to distinguish land use types more precisely. The model was validated in the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration using random sampling, comparative analysis and case studies. Results demonstrate that the UMH–LUC model achieved an identification accuracy of 81.7% and a Kappa coefficient of 77.6%, representing an 11.9% improvement over a non-morphology-based approach. Moreover, the overall disagreement for UMH–LUC is 0.183, a reduction of 0.099 compared to LUC without urban morphology and 0.19 compared to EULUC-China. The model performed particularly well in identifying residential land, mixed-use areas and marginal lands. This confirms urban morphology’s value in supporting low-cost, efficient land use mapping with applications for sustainable planning and management. Full article

Fungal melanonychia is an uncommon condition, most typically caused by opportunistic melanin-producing pigmented filamentous fungi in the nail plate. In the present study, the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with fungal melanonychia were analyzed through a systematic review of cases reported in the literature. The MESH terms used for the search were “melanonychia” AND “fungal” OR “fungi” through four databases: PubMed, SciELO, Google scholar and SCOPUS. After discarding inadequate articles using the exclusion criteria, 33 articles with 133 cases were analyzed, of which 44% were women, 56% were men and the age range was between 9 and 87 years. The majority of cases were reported in Turkey followed by Korea and Italy. Frequent causal agents detected were Trichophyton rubrum as non-dematiaceous in 55% and Neoscytalidium dimidiatum as dematiaceous in 8%. Predisposing factors included nail trauma, migration history, employment and/or outdoor activities. Involvement in a single nail was presented in 45% of the cases, while more than one affected nail was identified in 21%, with a range of 2 to 10 nails. Regarding the clinical classification, 41% evidenced more than one type of melanonychia, 21% corresponded to the longitudinal pattern and 13% was of total diffuse type. Likewise, the usual dermoscopic pattern was multicolor pigmentation. It is concluded that fungal melanonychia is an uncommon variant of onychomycosis and the differential diagnosis is broad, which highlights the complexity of this disease. Full article

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) has a significant role in fibrinolysis, atherogenesis, cellular senescence, and chronic inflammation. OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) leads to increased PAI-1 levels and the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of CPAP therapy on coagulation parameters and PAI-1 in patients with severe OSA. This prospective, controlled study enrolled 57 patients who were newly diagnosed with severe OSA, 37 of whom had had good CPAP adherence after 6 months of therapy (usage of the device for at least 4 h per night), and their data were analyzed. The analysis showed a statistically significant increase in D-dimer values before CPAP therapy (415 (316.5–537.5)) vs. after therapy (499 (327–652)), p = 0.0282, and a decrease in fibrinogen values (3.665 ± 0.752 before CPAP therapy vs. 3.365 ± 0.771 after therapy, p = 0.0075)). PAI-1 concentration values before and after CPAP therapy did not differ significantly (17.35 ± 7.01 ng/mL before CPAP therapy vs. 17.42 ± 6.99 ng/mL after therapy, p = 0.9367). This study shows a tendency for fibrinolytic capacity to improve in patients with OSA after CPAP therapy, although PAI-1 levels did not differ significantly. Full article

Accurately controlling the dynamic response and suppression of undesirable dynamics such as overshoots and vibrations is a vital requirement for soft robots operating in industrial environments. Pneumatically actuated soft robots usually undergo large overshoots and significant vibrations when deactuated because of their highly flexible bodies. These large vibrations not only decrease the reliability and accuracy of the soft robot but also introduce undesirable characteristics in the system. For example, it increases the settling time and damages the body of the soft robot, compromising its structural integrity. The dynamic behavior of the soft robots on deactuation needs to be accurately controlled to increase their utility in real-world applications. The literature on pneumatic soft robots still does not sufficiently address the issue of suppressing undesirable vibrations. To address this issue, we propose the use of impedance control to regulate the dynamic response of pneumatic soft robots since the superiority of impedance control is already established for rigid robots. The soft robots are highly nonlinear systems; therefore, we formulated a nonlinear discrete sliding mode impedance controller to control the pneumatic soft robots. The formulation of the controller in discrete-time allows efficient implementation for a high-order system model without the need for state-observers. The simplification and efficiency of the proposed controller enable fast implementation of an embedded system. Unlike other works on pneumatic soft robots, the proposed controller does not require manual tuning of the controller parameters and automatically calculates the parameters based on the impedance value. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed controller, we used a 6-chambered parallel soft robot as an experimental platform. We presented the comparative results with an existing state-of-the-art controller in SMC control of pneumatic soft robots. The experiment results indicate that the proposed controller can effectively limit the amplitude of the undesirable vibrations. Full article

Worldwide, nurse shortages constitute a problem, including in the Netherlands. Every region in the country has a shortage of all types of nurses. At the same time, there are large hidden reserves: persons who have been trained as a nurse but do not work in the healthcare sector. The size of the hidden reserve exceeds the shortage of nurses. Until now, the literature has not paid much attention to spatial aspects of the nursing shortage problem. In this paper, we analyze the size of the hidden reserves and how they are distributed over the country, across large and smaller cities, and across different nurse categories. We find that especially densely populated areas have relatively small shares of trained nurses as well as large hidden reserves relative to their population. These areas are also facing the largest nurse shortages. As nurse labor markets are local, policies that are more focused on local situations are necessary to activate these hidden reserves. Study on Driving Factors and Spatiotemporal Differentiation of Eco-Environmental Quality in Jianghuai River Basin of China

For an in-depth analysis of the ecosystems of the Jianghuai Valley, this study utilized municipal data from 2017 to 2021. In addition, this study established an index scale evaluation system for the quality of the ecological environment in the Jianghuai Valley. This system encompasses five critical dimensions: drivers, pressures, states, impacts, and responses, in accordance with the DPSIR model. The entropy-weighted TOPSIS method combined with the gray correlation method was used to assess the ecological status of each region of the Jianghuai Valley at different time periods and the driving factors affecting the ecological quality of the Jianghuai Valley. Our study yields several key conclusions. First, it was observed that the ecological environment within the Jianghuai Valley showed a continuous upward bias in inter-annual variability. Second, there exists variation in ecological environment quality among the eleven urban areas within the Jianghuai Valley, highlighting regional disparities. Third, among the eleven urban areas in the Jianghuai Valley, Anqing has the best ecological quality, and Huainan has the worst ecological performance. Fourth, the ecological environment quality within the Jianghuai Valley demonstrates an aggregated pattern. From west to east, this pattern is delineated by distinct areas: one marked by excellent ecological environment quality, another exhibiting average ecological environment quality, followed by a zone characterized by good ecological environment quality, and finally, an area with poor ecological environment. Fifth, our analysis reveals that Q9 (indicating the percentage of excellent air days) and Q13 (denoting the annual average temperature) have a pronounced correlation with the Jianghuai Valley’s ecological quality. Conversely, Q3, which pertains to the rate of natural population growth, had the lowest relevance to the ecological quality of the Jianghuai Valley. Full article
