Replication of the Small Coliphage M13: Evidence for Long-living M13 Specific Messenger RNA

Abstract

THE stability of messenger RNA has been the object of intense investigations. In the Escherichia coli system, predominantly the mRNAs for inducible enzymes or mRNAs specified by lytic or inducible phages have been studied. All such mRNAs were found to have half lives of the order of several minutes, even when measured on the basis of physical rather than biological decay times. Because of technical difficulties it has not so far been possible to measure the half-lives of mRNAs for non-adaptive coli enzymes, but one would expect these mRNAs to be more stable than those coding for adaptive enzymes.
