Absorption Spectra, Molecular Weights and Visual Purple

Abstract

Collins and Morton1 have recently compared Houston's equation2 with Macsoll's3 where ϵmax. is the molecular extinction coefficient at the maximum of an absorption band the wave-length of which is λm (= 1/vm);λ' (= 1/v) is the wavelength at which the absorption is semi-maximal, A and B are universal constants, n is the refractive index of the solvent at λm, and p is the classical oscillator strength ; f is given approximately by the expression where C is another universal constant, and a is the area included between the absorption curve and the wave-length scale.
