The method of adding colour to an otherwise monochrome image to enhance interpretability is very common. However, many of the commonly used colour tables tend to obscure rather than to enhance fine gradations of intensity, and are not suitable for images with exceptionally large dynamic ranges. A colour table has been set up to achieve fine resolution over a wide dynamic range.
