Infrared absorption spectra of oxyfluorides of some metals of the fourth and fifth groups of the periodic table

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

We have described the infrared absorption spectra of oxyfluorides of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, and niobium and also zirconium dioxide (in the solid state).

  2. 2.

We have shown the existence of vanadyl, zirconyl, and hafnyl groups and have confirmed the existence of a niobyl group. The chains . -Ti-O-Ti- . are present in titanium oxyfluoride.

  3. 3.

The HfO bond strength is greater than that of ZrO, which is presumably due to the reduction of the MO bond on transition from hafnium to zirconium.
