Abstract
ENGLISH-SPEAKING physiologists have been conscious for the past seven years of the debt which they owe to Prof. Anrep for his admirable translation of the first (1926) Russian edition of this book. The volume before us is a translation into German of the second edition, which was published less than a year after the first. No significant changes have been made in the text, but the bibliography at the end is much more complete. In his preface, the translator states that histological confirmation has now been obtained for the view that destruction of the upper portion of the basilar membrane in the cochlea abolishes responses to low tones while leaving those to high tones unaffected. He also confirms the existence of “conditioned inhibitory stimuli of the second order”.
