Summary
A statistically significant depression of the cholesterol level by means of high doses of ascorbic acid was shown in healthy, normocholesterolemic men in the middle age group, who were previously well supplied with dietary ascorbic acid. The extent of cholesterol level decrease depended on the vitamin C dosage and became the clearer the longer ascorbic acid was administered. The correlation between the ascorbic acid status and arteriosclerosis is discussed as well as possible interpretations of the conflicting findings in the literature.
