Thin-film phonon interferometry

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Physik B Condensed Matter

Abstract

Thin-film phonon interferences can be used to build fast phonon spectrometers. The analogy and the differences to thin-film photon interferometry and to Fourier spectroscopy are worked out and related experiments with photons are described. Multiplebeam interferograms are observed in growing cryogenic films using coherent 24-GHz phonons.

In these experiments the damping factor in thin silver films was measured
