Abstract
Thin-film phonon interferences can be used to build fast phonon spectrometers. The analogy and the differences to thin-film photon interferometry and to Fourier spectroscopy are worked out and related experiments with photons are described. Multiplebeam interferograms are observed in growing cryogenic films using coherent 24-GHz phonons.

In contrast to our experiment, the film thickness was kept constant, and the frequency of the hypersound was changed from 8.5 to 10.0 GHz and the ratio of two subsequent echo amplitudes was observed. In these experiments the damping factor in thin silver films was measured
