    Description / Table of Contents: Several kinds of techniques for multiple criteria decision making have been developed for the last few decades. Above all, the aspiration level approach to multi-objective programming problems is widely recognized to be effective in many practical fields. As a variant of the aspiration level approach, the author developed the satisficing tradeoff method. In addition, he has been applying the method to several kinds of practical problems for these ten years. Some of them were already performed in real life. Typical examples such as feed formulation for live stock, erection management of a cable stayed bridge and bond portfolio selection will be included in this paper.

    Description / Table of Contents: When a real world problem is formulated as a linear programming model, we are often faced with difficulties in the parameter specification. We might know the plausible values or the possible ranges of parameters, but there still remains uncertainty. The parameter values could be obtained more exactly by experiments, investigations and/or inspections. However, to make such an experiment, investigation or inspection, expenses would be necessary. Because of capital limitations, we cannot invest in all possible experiments, investigations and inspections. Thus, we have a selection problem, which uncertainty reduction is the most profitable.In this paper, we discuss an analytic approach to the problem. Because of the difficulty of the global analysis, we make a local analysis around appropriate values of parameters. We focus on giving the decision maker useful information for the selection. First, sensitivity analyses with respect to the uncertain parameters are developed. The sensitivities are available only for the marginal domain without changing the optimal basis. The domain is obtained as an interval. The difficulty of the sensitivity analysis is in the cases of degeneracy and multiplicity of the optimal solutions. A treatment of such difficult cases is proposed. Finally, a numerical example is given for illustrating the proposed approach.

    Description / Table of Contents: Policies for the management of natural resources and the resources themselves interact to form complex systems. In this paper, we present a highly simplified model that can be used to study the general features of those systems. The model has three state variables, the abundance of the resource, environmental pollution, and the capital devoted to pollution control. We analyze it graphically using the singular perturbation approach. Two modes of behavior are possible, stationary and cyclic. When the abundance of the resources varies cyclically, the length of the period of resource scarcity depends on population size, economic activity, pollution per unit of output and on policy constraints. We distinguish between two classes of policies, one in which decision-makers base their investments in pollution control capital on the abundance of the resource, and another in which those decisions depend on the amount of pollution. We show that policies based on the observation of pollution are safer than those based on resource abundance, because in the latter case, small changes in policy variables can much more easily lead to a collapse of the resource. Increases in population size, even when accompanied by an equiproportional increase in the pollution control budget can lead to a change from stationary to cyclic behavior, especially where policies are based on resource abundance.

    Description / Table of Contents: Modeling and simulation of various physical, environmental or socioeconomic processes is often a preliminary step for using the resulting models in decision support. With the advancements of computing technology and the methodology of decision support, it is now necessary to revise basic approaches to modeling and simulation: from the very beginning of model construction, they should aim at multi-objective analysis of the model while taking into account various optimization, sensitivity analysis and symbolic manipulation techniques treated as tools of such an analysis, not as goals. The paper illustrates how such an approach could increase the opportunities of comprehensive analysis of a model from a selected class -- as an example, the class of nonlinear dynamic discrete-time models was chosen. A user-friendly format of formulating such models is discussed together with related problems of inverse, constrained and multi-objective simulation as well as structural differentiation and sensitivity analysis, fuzzy set processing and other related issues. As a new tool for the analysis of boundaries of sets generated by such models -- for example. the a-level sets of fuzzy membership functions -- an interactive method of using an elastic "electronic pencil" is proposed.
