Description / Table of Contents: The raised marine terraces of the icebound Bunger Oasis are described. The Holocene marine transgression entered the oasis before 7.7 ka BP and raised with marine limits 7.5± 1 m above the modern limit were formed throughout most of the oasis by 5.6-5 ka BP. All raised beaches recorded are of middle to late Holocene age and indicate an average isostatic uplift rate of 1.4 m/ka during this time. The raised beaches occur at similar altitudes to those at Vestfold Hills (up tp 10 m) but are lower than the beaches on the Windmill Islands (23 -30 m). Morphological evidence suggests that at Bunger Hills open water wave action may have been more important during middle than late Holocene times when strong sea ice pushing occured on most beaches. The last glaciation ice cover over the inner continental shelf at Bunger Hills appears to have been relatively thin, probably about 154 and 400 m in thickness. The similarity in maximum altitudes of raised beaches at Vestfold Hills suggests similiar ice thicknesses while the higher beaches at Windmill Islands suggests the ice may have been about 450 m thick. The evidence from the raised beaches in East Antarctica suggests that the expansion of continental ice was about 50% that envisaged by the Hughes et al. (1981) model derived from the Ross Sea. The ice sheet may not have extended to the edge of the continental shelf though more evidence is required from the shelf to determine its extent at maximum glaciation.

Description / Table of Contents: One of the weakest links in present ice dynamics models is the lack of an adequate empirical flow law for polycrystalline ice in its natural state. Inadequacies include a paucity of creep data relevant to cold ice masses and a general neglect of the effects of preferred crystal orientation fabrics. The present study reports the results of 150 000 hours of creep tests on isotropic aggregates replicating conditions of temperature and shear stress relevant to polar ice masses, from which an extended isotropic flow law has been constructed. It is shown how anisotropic crystal orientation fabrics can be incorporated into such a flow law. The quantitative model developed for this purpose is made possible by: (a) the definition of a normalised third deviatoric stress invariant as a configuration parameter describing the geometrical distribution of shear stress; and (b) a reinterpretation of the scalar geometric factor employed in the analysis of monocrystalline creep as a tensor coefficient of correlation between the orientation fabric and the stress configuration parameter. Laboratory experiments are presented to substantiate the validity of the model.

Description / Table of Contents: Work on the geomorphology and Quaternary geology of the Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, Antarctica, is summarised. Structural, cryogenic and coastal landforms are described and an interpretation of evidence for late Quaternary events is offered. Twelve types of periglacial landforms engendered by four agents are described. Periglacial landforms have developed on surfaces that have been ice-free for less than 5000 years. Measurement of expansion and contraction of sorted circles showed that their development is active in summer and stable in winter. Since the late Pleistocene there have been at least two glacial cycles in the Vestfold Hills. Some of the present ice-free area was under the sea for an unknown duration ending about 25 000 years BP. From then until about 10 000 years BP ice covered the present ice-free area with a minimum thickness of 158 m. The period 6000 - 5000 years BP was one of milder climate with relative sea level higher than at present so that many valleys were invaded by the sea in which there was abundant plant and animal life. Glacio-isostatic uplift has caused regression and a fall of about 15 m in relative sea level during the last 6000 years. A series of young recessional ice-cored shear moraines reflect ice fluctuation that may correspond with Middle to Late Holocene ice advance and retreat documented in other parts of the world. Ice fronts are still in retreat.

Description / Table of Contents: Macrozooplankton data from the Prydz Bay region, collected between 1981 and 1991, and representing the months of September to March, were analysed using cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling to define the communities within the region, their distribution patterns, indicator species and species affinities.
