Notes: Abstract We describe a subcomplex S* (G) of a K(G,1) which depends on a given presentation of the group G. We prove that under a certain condition S* (G) is a K(G,1). Complexes of the type S* (G) arise in the homotopy theory of the classifying space for foliations.

Notes: Abstract Large sediment-hosted lead+zinc deposits like Mount Isa, McArthur River, Navan, Rammelsberg and Sullivan form a distinctive group characterised by stratiform, syngenetic sulphide ores that formed in local basins on the sea floor as a result of protracted hydrothermal activity accompanying continental rifting. Generally there is a development of a sedimentary pre-ore phase mineralization often featuring manganese followed by zinc±lead, iron and chert. Lower main phase zinc+lead lenses are usually almost devoid of copper but Cu tenors increase toward the middle or top of the ore sequences. Hanging wall trace element haloes are common. These characteristics are accounted for by deriving the ore solutions from subsurface convective circulation of modified highly saline seawater. The circulation is initiated during rifting and driven by a high geothermal gradient. As a result of continued extensional strain and cooling of the rock column the brittle-to-ductile transition zone is depressed and the circulation penetrates to greater depth with time. Of the ore metals the downward-penetrating convection fluids first leach and transport zinc and lead, but with increasing temperature are later able to leach and transport some copper. Unless convective circulation ceases the metal sequence generally reverses as the cooling phase sets in. The minimum distance separating major coeval orebodies of this type is 18 km which is a function of the size of the convective systems.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe von Untersuchungen des Spurenelement-Gehaltes von Sulfiden wurden die Temperaturen der Mineralbildung abgeschätzt.
Notes: Abstract Trace element studies of sulphides have been used to estimate temperatures of mineral formation, to identify metallogenic provinces, and to investigate the environment of mineral deposition. In the investigation of depositional environments, the Co:Ni and S:Se ratios are potentially useful as discriminators between magmatic-hydrothermal and sedimentary environments. A wide range of ore-types occurs in the Lower Palaeozoic rocks of West Tasmania (Australia) which lies in the southern part of the Tasman Geosyncline. The cobalt and nickel contents of pyrites from a number of these ores have been determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Preliminary results show that the pyrites may be grouped as follows: a) those of sedimentary or diagenetic origin in shales (high cobalt and nickel and Co:Ni〈1), b) those of probable volcanic origin without accompanying lead and zinc minerals (Co:Ni〉1), and c) those of probable volcanic origin associated with lead and zinc minerals, and those with cassiterite or argentiferous galena related to granitic intrusions (low cobalt and nickel and Co:Ni〈1). In some areas there is evidence that relatively high cobalt and selenium contents in pyrite may be related to volcanic processes.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Die Verteilung von Sauerstoff- und Schwefel-Isotopen in den Erzkörpern von Rosebery, Mount Farrell und Mount Lyell wurde untersucht.
Notes: Abstract Preliminary studies have been made on the distributions of oxygen and sulphur isotopes in the Rosebery, Mount Farrell, and Mount Lyell ores. These ores lie in Cambrian geosynclinal volcanic rocks in West Tasmania. At each locality the sulphur of the sulphide minerals has a distinctive degree of enrichment in δ34S in relation to sulphur in meteorites and a narrow range of δ34S values. The dominant ore at Mount Lyell (mainly pyrite-chalcopyrite) has an average δ34S value of +7.0‰, the main lode at Rosebery (pyrite-sphalerite-galenachalcopyrite) averages +10.9‰, and the Mount Farrell ore (galena-sphalerite) averages +14.1‰. The degree of enrichment does not appear to be related to local, near-surface geological factors. Other ores of geosynclinal volcanic type with similar mineralogy also show narrow ranges in δ34S and varying enrichments in 34S. Barite from a concordant sulphide-barite-carbonate lode at Rosebery has an average δ34S of +38.1‰ and an average δ18O of +10.7‰. Barite from veins at Mount Lyell has an average δ34S of +25.3‰ and an average δ18O of +10.6‰.

Notes: Two trials were conducted. In trial I, boneless hams were cured with salt, sugar, potassium nitrate and sodium nitrite or salt, sugar and nitrite only. Half of the hams in each group was tied with heavy twine and half was enclosed in elastic netting. There were no differences in any variable due to the oresence or absence of nitrate. Hams that were netted had higher yields after curing and aging than tied hams. They also had a more desirable general appearance. There were no differences in composition, palatability scores or tenderness. In trial II one group of boneless hams was dipped in 2.5% potassium sorbate solution, placed in elastic netting, cured and aged while a similar group was not dipped. Treated hams were slightly more desirable in general appearance, slightly higher in moisture and lower in nitrite. Flavor (P 〈 0.05) and overall satisfaction scores (P 〈 0.01) favored the treated group. Saltiness scores also were lower (P 〈 0.05) in the treated group. Yeast and mold counts were lower (P 〈 0.05) for the treated groups after curing, after salt equalization and after aging 1 month, indicating that potassium sorbate could be used successfully as a yeast-and-mold-retardant in cured hams.

Notes: [Auszug] ONE of the most familiar concepts of population dynamics is the idea of the regulation of abundance by density-dependent factors, which operate more severely at high density than at low density, per individual of a population. But there has been some variation in the meaning and scope of ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE occurrence of a frothy siliceous glass, from the eastern slopes of Mt. Darwin, Western Tasmania, was brought to scientific attention in 1910 by M. Donoghue. It was first mistaken for slag from an abandoned copper smelter. In 1913, H. Conder, State mining engineer, informed the Geological Survey ...
