    Notes: Abstract  The design of microstructured components fabricated by LIGA combines concurrently the layout for mask lithography as well as the configuration of appropriate process sequences that allow the error-free fabrication of the microstructures. This paper describes methods and tools that support the design of consistent process step configurations that allow to predict in advance the effort assigned to specific process arrangements. Based on formal process description means the microsystems' designer can edit, assess and optimise consistent technology steps with regard to costs, time and feasibility providing an interface to later layout verification.

    Notes: Summary Polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) undergo a marked activation of their oxidative metabolism upon interaction with surface-reactive soluble stimuli as well as with phagocytosable objects. To get some insight into the mechanism of this stimulation, we have compared the stimulatory activity of the tetravalent lectin concanavalin A (Con A) with that of the divalent derivative succinyl-Con A (S-Con A). Both lectins bind to the PMNL surface to the same extent. S-Con A, however, is much less efficient in stimulating the PMNL metabolism. When S-Con A-treated PMNL are further reacted with antiserum to Con A, a potentiation of the metabolic stimulation is observed. Normal serum or addition to PMNL of antiserum to Con A in the absence of lectin has no effect. Furthermore, if S-Con A is displaced from its receptors on the cell membrane with α-methyl mannopyranoside, the addition of antiserum fails to cause a respiratory stimulation. These results suggest that the initial triggering of the metabolic stimulation of PMNL is in part accomplished through cross-linkage of membrane constituents.

    Notes: Abstract The capacity of mesophilic sulfate-reducing bacteria to grow lithoautotrophically with H2, sulfate and CO2 was investigated with enrichment cultures and isolated species. (a) Enrichments in liquid mineral media with H2, sulfate and CO2 consistently yielded mixed cultures of nonautotrophic, acetate-requiring Desulfovibrio species and autotrophic, acetate-producing Acetobacterium species (cell ratio approx. 20:1). (b) By direct dilution of mud samples in agar, various non-sporing sulfate reducers were isolated in pure cultures that did grow autotrophically. Two oval cell types (strains HRM2, HRM4) and one curved cell type (strain HRM6) from marine sediment were studied in detail. The strains grew in mineral medium supplemented only with vitamins (biotin, p-aminobenzoate, nicotinate). Carbon autotrophy was evident (i) from comparative growth experiments with non-autotrophic, acetate-requiring species, (ii) from high cell densities ruling out a cell synthesis from organic impurities in the mineral media, and (iii) by demonstrating that 96–99% of the cell carbon was derived from 14C-labelled CO2. Autotrophic growth occurred with a doubling time of 16–20 h at 24–28°C. Formate, fatty acids up to palmitate, ethanol, lactate, succinate, fumarate, malate and other organic acids were also used and completely oxidized. The three strains possessed cytochromes of the b-and c-type, but no desulfoviridin. Strain HRM2 is described as a new species of a new genus, Desulfobacterium autotrophicum. (c) The capacity for autotrophic growth was also tested with sulfate-reducing bacteria that originally had been isolated on organic substrates. The incompletely oxidizing, non-sporing types such as Desulfovibrio and Desulfobulbus species and Desulfomonas pigra were confirmed to be obligate heterotrophs that required acetate for growth with H2 and sulfate. In contrast, several of the completely oxidizing sulfate reducers were facultative autotrophs, such as Desulfosarcina variabilis, Desulfonema limicola, Desulfococcus niacini, and the newly isolated Desulfobacterium vacuolatum and Desulfobacter hydrogenophilus. The only incompletely oxidizing sulfate reducer that could grow autotrophically was the sporing Desulfotomaculum orientis, which obtained 96% of its cell carbon from 14C-labelled CO2. Desulfovibrio baarsii and Desulfococcus multivorans may also be regarded as types of facultative autotrophs; they could not oxidize H2, but grew on sulfate with formate as the only organic substrate.

    Notes: Summary The effect of an orally administered combination of naproxen sodium 550 mg and codeine phosphate 60 mg on threshold and tolerance to electrically induced pain, and on the threshold to thermally induced pain, was compared with the effects of naproxen sodium 550 mg alone, codeine phosphate 60 mg alone, and placebo. 16 female and 16 male, healthy young subjects, took part in four experiments on consecutive days of one week. On each day one treatment was administered, in random order, under double blind conditions. The combination increased threshold and tolerance to electrically induced pain and the threshold to thermally induced pain markedly more than did naproxen sodium alone. Naproxen sodium plus codeine was also more effective in increasing threshold and tolerance to electrically induced pain than was codeine alone; the latter increased the threshold and tolerance to electrically induced pain and the threshold to thermally induced pain markedly more than placebo. Naproxen sodium alone had a relatively weak effect on the three pain measures. Reaction time to acoustic stimuli and the side effect profile were not significantly influenced by any of the treatments, and no severe adverse effects occurred. It is concluded that the combination of naproxen sodium 550 mg and codeine phosphate 60 mg, as indicated by its effects on experimentally induced pain, can produce more intense analgesia than the same doses of naproxen sodium and codeine administered alone, and that naproxen sodium and codeine phosphate given in combination enhanced each other's effect in an additive manner.

    Notes: The forward nuclear scattering amplitudes of Ge, Cu and O for thermal neutrons have been determined from the refractive bending by pure single-crystal right prisms of germanium, copper, and quartz. The results are bGe = 8.1929 (17) fm and bCu = 7.689 (6) fm which are in good agreement with previous less accurate determinations by other methods and bO = 5.830 (2) fm which disagrees with an independent accurate determination by four standard deviations.
