Notes: Abstract A partial cDNA which codes for the β-subunit of a plastidic chaperonin 60 (cpn60-β) from rye (Secale cereale L.) leaves was identified and sequenced, except for 46 amino acids of the N-terminus of the mature protein and the transit sequence. This is the first cpn60-β sequence determined for a monocotyledonous plant. Specific antibodies against cpn60-β were affinity-purified from an antiserum raised against the total soluble protein fraction of ribosome-deficient plastids. The localization of cpn60-β in chloroplasts or non-green plastids was confirmed by immunodetection in Percoll gradient-purified organelles. The expression and occurrence of cpn60-β was analysed by immunoblotting with the specific antibodies and Northern hybridization. The cpn60-β protein was constitutively expressed in various green and non-green tissues. It was evenly distributed along the major part of a rye leaf, while highest transcript levels occurred in the youngest and oldest leaf sections. The expression of the cpn60-β protein was not enhanced by a heat-shock treatment at 42 °C. The cpn60-β transcript and protein were more strongly expressed in various non-green, for instance etiolated, 70S-ribosome-deficient 32 °C-grown, or herbicide-bleached tissues, than in green leaves of rye. A rapid increase in the cpn60-β transcript level was also observed when green leaves were transferred from light to darkness while the protein level was not affected. The dark-induced increase in the cpn60-β transcript was totally suppressed in the presence of 2% sucrose. Inhibitor treatments suggested that the change in cpn60-β transcript level was not related to changes of the ATP supply of the tissue. While the large subunit of the photosynthetic protein ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase was largely degraded during ripening of tomato fruits, high levels of cpn60-β were detected in tomato chromoplasts and in the yellow flower petals of Narcissus. Low levels of cpn60-β were detected in root tissue.

Description / Table of Contents: Interactions between creep deformation and hot gas corrosionThe paper starts with a short explanation of the basic processes during the high temperature corrosion and of deformation under creep stress.Corrosion may give rise to an increase or a decrease of creep resistance, or it may result in an increase of the stress applied. The individual mechanisms are explained and, as far as possible, illustrated by examples. As a rule, however, several factors act simultaneously. The concerted actions is further complicated by back effects of a creep deformation on the corrosion processes. In the case of iron and nickel base alloys there exist obviously critical strain rates beyond which corrosion is enhanced and then proceeds more pronouncedly at the grain boundaries. It is also possible that then internal corrosion processes are triggered, in particular, in the grain boundary regions. While a qualitative assessment of the relationships between corrosion and creep deformation is possible, the feasibility of a quantitative description is still far away. As a rule, however, the aspect of a strength decrease will prevail although, in principle, corrosion may give rise to a strengthening, too.

Notes: The chain stiffness of a methoxypropyl-substituted poly[1.1.1]propellane in solution is investigated by static and dynamic light scattering. The Kuhn statistical segment length is determined as lk=150Å utilizing the Kratky-Porod wormlike chain model. It is, however, not yet clear whether the derived Kuhn length characterizes the chain stiffness of a perfect polypropellane chain or rather originates from “kinks” in the polymer backbone due to the presence of possible side reactions during polymerization.

Notes: The suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride is studied in a bench-scale reactor adequately reproducing reaction conditions and resin properties of industrial relevance. The evolution of particle morphology is analyzed at different stages of conversion, and a model for particle formation is verified. The influence of viscosity of the suspension medium is analyzed in relation to molecular weight distribution and particle morphology.

Description / Table of Contents: The results of measurements of the thin film growth rate along the wall of long discharge tubes with flowing gas are presented. The dependence of the growth rate distribution along the tube wall on various parameters is discussed. The analysis of the conversion rate of the monomer to thin film material leads to important conclusions on the mechanism of glow polymer film formation.

Speziell die Auswertung des Umsetzungsgrades liefert wichtige Aussagen zum Mechanismus der Glimmpolymerschichtbildung.
