    Description: C37-C39 long-chain unsaturated ketones (alkenones) and alkenes were identified in samples of particulate organic matter obtained from surface waters spanning the temperature range -0.7–12.2°C in the Southern Ocean south of Australia. The carbon number distribution indicates that these compounds are derived from the prymnesiophyte alga Emiliania huxleyi which is the predominant coccolithophorid in these waters. Values of Uk'37 were calculated according to the definition UK'37 = [37:2]/([37:2] + [37:3]), where [37:x] is the concentration of the C37 alkenone with “x” double bonds, and plotted against sea surface temperature (SST). Our data form a contiguous set with earlier compilations of data from warmer waters. Over much of the temperature range the relationship between Uk'37 and temperature is remarkably linear, and is best fitted by the simple equation Uk'37 = 0.0414T - 0.156 (for temperatures 4-25°C). This calibration of Uk'37 with temperature for field samples is significantly different from that established from analyses of prymnesiophyte algae in culture, and it diverges especially at the colder temperatures. Data for temperatures below about 4-6°C show increased scatter and the calibration at these low temperatures may be better fitted by a nonlinear exponential function, but this requires further testing. Certainly, the predictive power of the linear calibration is severely constrained at temperatures less than 5.0°C, but at temperatures above this our data establish the usefulness of Uk'37 as an SST indicator for waters north of the polar front in the Southern Ocean and for several regions of the world ocean.

    Description: The concentration of C37-C39 long-chain alkenones and alkenes were determined in surface water and surface sediment samples from the subpolar waters of the Southern Ocean. Distributions of these compounds were similar in both sample sets indicating little differential degradation between or within compound classes. The relative amounts of the tri- to tetra-unsaturated C37 alkenones increased with increasing temperature for temperatures below 6°C similar to the di- and tri-unsaturated C37 alkenones. The C37 di-, tri-, and tetra-unsaturated methyl alkenones are used in paleotemperature calculations via the U37K and the U37K ratios. In these datasets, the relative abundances of the C37:2 and the C37.3 alkenones as a proportion of the total C37 alkenones were opposite and strongly related to temperature (the latter with more scatter), but the abundance of the C37:4 alkenone showed no relationship with temperature. The original definition of U37K includes the abundance of 37:4 in both the numerator and denominator, and thus it is perhaps not surprising that there is considerable scatter in the values obtained for U37K at low temperatures. Of the two, we suggest that U37K' is the better parameter for use in paleotemperature estimations, even in cold locations. U37K' values in the sediments fall on virtually the same regression line obtained for the water column samples of Sikes and Volkman (1993, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(93)90120-L), indicating that their calibration is suitable for use in Southern Ocean sediments. The comparison of water column data with sedimentary temperature estimates suggests that the alkenone distributions are dominated by contributions from the summer when the biomass of Emiliania huxleyi and presumably flux to the sediment, is expected to be high.

    Description: We have measured the stable carbon isotopic composition of bulk organic matter (POC), alkenones, sterols, fatty acids, and phytol in the coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi grown in dilute batch cultures over a wide range of CO2 concentrations (1.1-53.5 micromol L-1). The carbon isotope fractionation of POC (POC) varied by ca. 7 per mil and was positively correlated with aqueous CO2 concentration [CO2aq]. While this result confirms general trends observed for the same alga grown in nitrogen-limited chemostat cultures, considerable differences were obtained in absolute values of POC and in the slope of the relationship of POC with growth rate and [CO2aq]. Also, a significantly greater offset was obtained between the delta13C of alkenones and bulk organic matter in this study compared with previous work (5.4, cf. 3.8 per mil). This suggests that the magnitude of the isotope offset may depend on growth conditions. Relative to POC, individual fatty acids were depleted in 13C by 2.3 per mil to 4.1 per mil, phytol was depleted in 13C by 1.9 per mil, and the major sterol 24-methylcholesta-5,22E-dien-3beta-ol was depleted in 13C by 8.5 per mil. This large spread of delta13C values for different lipid classes in the same alga indicates the need for caution in organic geochemical studies when assigning different sources to lipids that might have delta13C values differing by just a few per mil. Increases in [CO2aq] led to dramatic increases in the alkenone contents per cell and as a proportion of organic carbon, but there was no systematic effect on values of U37k- used for reconstructions of paleo sea surface temperature.
