    Notes: Abstract In geodetic and geophysical applications of GPS, it is important to realize the ephemerides of the GPS satellites and the coordinates of station positions in a consistent reference system. At present, more than one reference system is being used by various GPS users depending on their specific applications. The WGS-84 and various reference frames based on satellite laser ranging (SLR), very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), or a combination of SLR and VLBI are the most commonly used in high precision geophysical applications. The WGS-84 is widely used in applications which rely on the GPS broadcast ephemeris. Station coordinates estimated in one system may have to be transformed to another for further use or for evaluation/comparison purposes. This paper presents a seven-parameter transformation between the WGS-84 and SLR/VLBI reference frames. The GPS double-differenced phase measurements for two consecutive weeks from a set of five Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) sites (defined in the WGS-84 frame) and from an augmented set of fifteen CIGNET sites (defined in the SLR/VLBI frame) were processed in a least squares estimation scheme to determine station coordinates, from which the transformation parameters were determined. A scale difference of about 0.2 ppm and an orientation difference in longitude of about 31 milliarcseconds were found to be the only parameters of significance between the adopted SLR/VLBI and the WGS-84 frames. Transformation between WGS-84 and the ITRF90 is also included, in which the scale difference is the same as before but the longitude rotation is about 16 mas.

    Notes: The secular change in the mean motion of the Moon, nud, caused by the tidal dissipation in the ocean and solid Earth is due primarily to the effect of the diurnal and semidiurnal tides. The long-period ocean tides produce an increase in nR, but the effects are only 1 per cent of the diurnal and semidiurnal ocean tides. In this investigation, expressions for these effects are obtained by developing the tidal potential in the ecliptic reference system. The computation of the amplitude of equilibrium tide and the phase corrections is also discussed. The averaged tidal deceleration of the Moon's mean motion, nud, from the most recent satellite ocean tide solutions is -25.25 ± 0.4 arcseconds/century2. The value for nud inferred from the satellite-determined ocean tide solution is in good agreement with the value obtained from the analysis of 20 years of lunar laser ranging observations.

    Notes: The recently launched TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter mission is achieving an unprecedented accuracy in the measurement of the absolute sea-level, demonstrating that satellite radar altimetry has evolved into one of the fundamental instruments for providing synoptic observations of the global oceans with a temporal sampling of a few days to a month. This paper assesses the current estimated accuracy of measurements using the available satellite radar altimeter systems in observing the absolute sea-level. The accuracy of sea-level measurements depends on the ability to compute accurate orbits of the altimetric satellites, the fidelity of the terrestrial reference system (TRF), and the knowledge of instrument biases of the altimeter instruments. In this paper, some applications of satellite altimetry to contemporary problems in marine geodesy, oceanography, an global change studies are discussed. Major advances for many of these problems are feasible with the abundance of satellite altimetry missions within this decade. The launch of ERS-1 and TOPEX/POSEIDON has initiated a decade of high-accuracy measurements of the absolute sea-level from satellite altimetry which holds potential for enhancing our knowledge of dynamics of the global ocean, and its influence on global climate changes.

    Notes: Abstract.  The structure of normal matrices occurring in the problem of weighted least-squares spherical harmonic analysis of measurements scattered on a sphere with random noises is investigated. Efficient algorithms for the formation of the normal matrices are derived using fundamental relations inherent to the products of two surface spherical harmonic functions. The whole elements of a normal matrix complete to spherical harmonic degree L are recursively obtained from its first row or first column extended to degree 2L with only O(L 4) computational operations. Applications of the algorithms to the formation of surface normal matrices from geoid undulations and surface gravity anomalies are discussed in connection with the high-degree geopotential modeling.

    Notes: Abstract. Seasonal steric sea-level change due to temperature variation in the mixing layer is assessed using space-measured sea-surface temperature data and historical in situ temperature measurements. The results are compared with TOPEX/Poseidon satellite altimeter measurement at different large spatial scales. It is indicated that thermal effect accounts for much of the observed seasonal variability, especially when averaging over zonal regions. Some regional seasonal patterns of sea-level anomalies in the tropical oceans are well represented by the thermal model prediction. Systematic differences are shown between TOPEX/Poseidon observation and thermal contribution at a 1–2 cm level. The potential causes for these differences are discussed, including water mass exchanges among the atmosphere, land, and oceans, and error sources in the steric result and geophysical corrections applied in TOPEX/Poseidon data.

    Notes: Abstract. Methods for analyzing laser-ranging residuals to estimate station-dependent systematic errors and to eliminate outliers in satellite laser ranges are discussed. A robust estimator based on an M-estimation principle is introduced. A practical calculation procedure which provides a robust criterion with high breakdown point and produces robust initial residuals for following iterative robust estimation is presented. Comparison of the results from the least-squares method with those of the robust method shows that the results of the station systematic errors from the robust estimator are more reliable.

    Notes: Abstract Modeling the effects of atmospheric drag is one of the more important problems associated with the determination of the orbit of a near-earth satellite. Errors in the drag model can lead to significant errors in the determination and prediction of the satellite motion. The uncertainty in the drag acceleration can be attributed to three separate effects: (a) errors in the atmospheric density model, (b) errors in the ballistic coefficient, and (c) errors in the satellite relative velocity. In a number of contemporary satellite missions, the requirements for performing the orbit determination and predictions in near real-time has placed an emphasis on density model computation time as well as the model accuracy. In this investigation, a comparison is made of three contemporary atmospheric density models which are candidates for meeting the current orbit computation requirements. The models considered are the analytic Jacchia-Roberts model, the modified Harris-Priester model, and the USSR Cosmos satellite derived density model. The computational characteristics of each of the models are compared and a modification to the modified Harris-Priester model is proposed which improves its ability to represent the diurnal variation in the atmospheric density.
