    Notes: Seven pairs of near-isogenic lines (glandless vs. glanded) and the recurrent parents were used to determine the effects of the dominant glandless gene from ‘Hai 1’(Gossypium barbadense) on agronomic, fibre, and seed characters in Upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum, backgrounds. The results showed that there were no apparent linkage associations of the glandless gene on most agronomic, fibre and seed characters of Upland cotton, except for seed quality. The glandless line derived from ‘Liaomian 7’had significantly more protein (489.6 g/kg), and that from H237 had significantly more oil (362.4 g/kg) and had the largest oil index (2.70 g) and protein index (3.03 g). The gossypol content of seed in dominant glandless lines in Upland cotton was very low (〈0.04 g/kg). Therefore, it is suggested that the glandless gene can play an important role in breeding glandless or low seed-gossypol Upland cotton cultivars.

    Notes: Cotton fibre mutants that were fuzzless and/or lintless were crossed with each other and a normal genotype (fuzzy, linted) to produce F2 and BC1 generations. F2 segregation ratios from the cross of fuzzless-lintless × fuzzy-linted, for fuzzy-linted, fuzzless-linted and fuzzless-lintless were 45 : 15 : 4. From the cross of fuzzless-lintless × fuzzy-linted, the F2 segregation ratios were 9 : 39 : 16 whereas the BC1F1 segregation ratios from the F1 backcrossed to fuzzless-lintless were 1 : 3 : 4. These data suggest that the presence or absence of lint and fuzz are controlled by the interaction of four gene loci on non-homologous chromosomes. We designate these loci as N1, N2, Li3 and Li4, where N1 N1 confers the presence of fuzzy, N2N2 confers inhibition of fuzzy initiation and development, and duplicate gene pairs, Li3Li3 and Li4Li4, determine the presence of lint. Homozygosity for li3li3 and li4li4 might also inhibit fuzz from development. In other words, they were recessive epistatic to fuzz genes.

    Notes: Paired A- and B-lines, cytoplasmic male-sterile (CMS)-lines and main-tainer lines, respectively, were crossed with R-lines (restorer) to produce A × R, R × B and B × R hybrids, which were used in 1993 and 1996 to predict the performance of three lypes of CMS cotton lines available in China. A significant difference in yield and yield components was revealed between paired A × R and B × R hybrids. This difference was greatly influenced by both CMS cytoplasm and the interaction between cytoplasm and nuclear genotypes. It is suggested that there are detrimental effects of CMS cytoplasm on yield and yield components. General combining ability of near-isogenic CMS lines was also affected by this negative effect. The detrimental effect was closely related to an increased number of immature seeds per boll, which might be caused by partial female sterility associated with CMS cytoplasm. The possibility of developing specific combinations of CMS Upland × Upland restorer hybrids that express enough heterosis for yield to overcome the detrimental effect of the CMS cytoplasm is discussed.

    Notes: An extended application of the magnetron sputtering discharge is described. The discharge, called a magnetically confined discharge in the experiments, is pumped in a pulse mode to produce and excite copper vapor atoms for laser operation. Copper atom densities adequate for laser action (∼1014 cm−3) are obtained in the discharge at temperatures below 400 K. Laser operation is expected in the experimental apparatus with fast-rise pulse pumping. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We report on recent results obtained for longitudinal field (T 1) spin relaxation of the muonium-substituted (“muonated”) free radicals MuCO, MuC2F4, MuC2H3F, and MuC4H8 (t-butyl), comparing with results reported earlier for MuC2H4 (and MuC2D4). Some comparison with transverse field (T 2) data is also given. These data are fit to a phenomenological model based on NMR theory of spin relaxation in gases. The parameters of these fits are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Muonium (Mu=μ++e-) is the bound state of a positive muon and an electron. Since the positive muon has a mass about 1/9 of the proton, Mu can be regarded as an ultra light isotope of hydrogen with unusually large mass ratios (Mu∶H∶D∶T=1/9∶1∶2∶3). The muon spin rotation technique (μSR) relies on the facts that (1) the muon produced in pion decay, π+ → ∶+ + υ∶, is 100% spin polarized and (2) the positron from muon decay is emitted preferentially along the instantaneous muon spin direction at the time of the muon decay. In transverse field μSR (TF-μSR), the precession of the muon spin in muonium substituted radicals is directly observed by detecting decay positrons time differentially. From observed radical frequencies, the hyperfine coupling constants (A μ) of C2H4Mu, C2D4Mu,13C2H4Mu, C2F4Mu, and C2H3FMu are determined. In the longitudinal field avoided level crossing (LF-ALC) technique, one observes the resonant loss of the muon spin polarization caused by the crossing of hyperfine levels at particular magnetic fields. The LF-ALC method together with the information onA μ obtained from TF-μSR allows one to determine the magnitude and sign of the nuclear hyperfine constants at α- and β-positions. Results are compared with hydrogen substituted ethyl-radicals and isotope effects are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Results of muon polarization studies in xenon and argon up to 60 atm are reported. In argon for pressures up to 10 atm, the muon polarization is best explained by an epithermalcharge exchange model. Above this pressure, the decrease inP D and increase inP L are ascribed to charge neutralization and spin exchange reactions, respectively, in the radiolysis track. Measurements with Xe/He mixtures with a xenon pressure of 1 atm indicate that the lost polarization in the pure xenon at this pressure is due to inefficient moderation of the muon. As the pressure in pure xenon is increased above 10 atm, we find thatP L remains roughly constant andP D begins to increase. The lost fraction may be due to the formation of a XeMu Van der Waals type complex, whileP D is ascribed to XeMu+ formation. This suggests that spur processes appear to be less important in xenon than in argon.

The results agree well with calculated stopping power based on proton data with the assumption that the positive muon and proton have the same stopping power at the same projectilew velocity (velocity scaling).

    Notes: Abstract Results of the first μSR studies using Merck FO Optipur silica powder, which contains paramagnetic impurities at the ppb level and has a surface area of 610±20 m2/g. are reported. Above 20 K, the transverse field muonium relaxation rate is roughly constant at 0.5 μs−1. Upon the addition of oxygen at ppm levels, the relaxation rate increases linearly with O2 concentration in the temperature range from 40–100 K yielding two-dimensional depolarization rate constants on the order of 10−4 cm2 molecule−1 s−1. As the temperature is increased further, both oxygen and muonium desorb from the surface yielding a three-dimensional rate constants at 300 K of 3.1(3)×10–10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, in agreement with the gas phase value. Longitudinal field measurements suggest that MuO2 is formed and is able to spin exchange with other oxygen molecules.
