Notes: Abstract In this paper structural and sensitivity analysis for the optimization of laminated axisymmetric shells subjected to static constraints and arbitrary loading is presented. The shell thickness, radial coordinate of a nodal point, lamina thickness and the angle of orientation of the fibers are the design variables. The objective of the design optimization is the minimization of the volume of the shell or the strain energy. The model is based on a three-node axisymmetric finite element with 24 degrees of freedom. A higher-order theory is developed for the nonlinear distribution of the meridional displacement component through the thickness of the shell. The sensitivities of the discrete model developed are evaluated analytically using a symbolic manipulator. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed model is discussed with reference to the applications.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a discrete model for the design sensitivity analysis of thin laminated angle-ply composite structures using a plate shell element based on a Kirchhoff discrete theory for the bending effects. To overcome the nondifferentiability of multiple eigenvalues, which may occur during a structural optimization involving free vibrations or buckling design situations, a nonsmooth eigenvalue based criterion is implemented. Angle-ply design variables and vectorial distances from the laminated midle surface to the upper surface of each layer are considered as design variables. The design sensitivities and the directional derivatives are evaluated analytically. The efficiency and accuracy of the model developed is discussed with two illustrative cases which show the need to compute sensitivities of multiple eigenvalues as directional derivatives for laminated composite structures.

Description: Nowadays, buildings environmental certifications encourage the implementation of initiatives aiming to increase energy efficiency in buildings. In these certification systems, increased energy efficiency arising from such initiatives must be demonstrated. Thus, a challenge to be faced is how to check the increase in energy efficiency related to each of the employed initiatives without a considerable building retrofit. In this context, this work presents a non-destructive method for electric current sensing to assess implemented initiatives to increase energy efficiency in buildings with environmental certification. This method proposes the use of a sensor that can be installed directly in the low voltage electrical circuit conductors that are powering the initiative under evaluation, without the need for reforms that result in significant costs, repair, and maintenance. The proposed sensor consists of three elements: an air-core transformer current sensor, an amplifying/filtering stage, and a microprocessor. A prototype of the proposed sensor was developed and tests were performed to validate this sensor. Based on laboratory tests, it was possible to characterize the proposed current sensor with respect to the number of turns and cross-sectional area of the primary and secondary coils. Furthermore, using the Least Squares Method, it was possible to determine the efficiency of the air core transformer current sensor (the best efficiency found, considering different test conditions, was 2%), which leads to a linear output response.

Description: Sensors, Vol. 18, Pages 3046: Development of a Surface Temperature Sensor to Enhance Energy Efficiency Actions in Buildings Sensors doi: 10.3390/s18093046 Authors: Lia Mota Alexandre Mota Cláudia Pezzuto Marcius Carvalho Marina Lavorato Lorenzo Coiado Everton Oliveira The air temperature increase in urban centers can lead to problems such as increased energy consumption associated to air conditioning, the intensification of pollution, human discomfort and health problems. In this context, the building envelope plays an important role in urban thermal equilibrium. Energy efficiency rating systems for buildings (LEED—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, AQUA—High Environmental Quality, PROCEL Edifica, etc.) stimulate energy efficiency actions in the built environment, considering, for example, the envelope and energy efficiency initiatives in buildings. Research carried out recently has shown that monitoring of buildings can provide important information about building performance, supporting building control strategies and enabling actions aimed at improving energy efficiency and thermal comfort. More specifically, wireless sensors are also being used to monitor buildings. This work proposes and presents the development of a surface temperature sensor that can support actions to enhance energy efficiency in the built environment, meeting the requirements proposed by the energy efficiency rating systems of buildings. This sensor must have characteristics such as low cost, the storage capacity of a large amount of data and the possibility of remote monitoring of the collected temperatures. Computer simulations and validation tests were carried out showing that the proposed sensor allows the remote monitoring (using a wireless transmission system) of the surface temperature in buildings, respecting the requirements of high storage capability and low cost.
