Description: This study examined yellowfin tuna catch data of a series of gill-net sets including 5 ¾ (Control), 6 ¾ , 7 ¾, 8 ½ and 9 1 /3 in both surface and mid-water catch method. Of the total research Cruises (22 days) done on March and April 2002, 19 and 3 net sets made by surface and mid- water (6 meter depth) method, respectively. According to the obtained data from surface One, 8 ½ mesh size constituted the highest proportion of total fish caught. A comparison of total weight caught by mesh size showed varying differences when tested with a one-way ANOVA.As well as, the results obtained by Duncan test indicated four distinct groups that the fish weight entangled from 8 ½ mesh size accounted for the major one. Analysis of data from 5 ¾ mesh size indicated that 30% of the catch fell out of the net during hauling. There was no significant difference between mean fork length among mesh size when tested with a one- way ANOVA. The results obtained from fish caught in three parts of net (top, middle, down) indicated that fish caught from the middle part were the highest proportion of total fish entangled. Similar to the surface catch method, 8 ½ mesh size caught highest proportion and weight to the total fish entangled in mid-water one. It needs to do further study to obtain the best mesh size for catching yellowfin tuna in surface catch method and depth of water for netting in mid-water catch method as well as to compare both methods.

Description: Blackmouth croackers (Atrobucca nibe) resources are the most important commercial stocks in the north-west of Oman Sea, exploited as lantern fisheries by catch with trawlers vessel. At least 50 specimens were sampled monthly from September 2012 to July 2014. Results showed blackmouth croacker have several small peak in gonado-somatic index, but the most frequency of adults occurred in May. The female: male ratio was calculated 1:0.8 and the LM50 was estimated at 35 cm. The mean of absolute and relative fecundity were estimated 92988 and 223 respectively. LM50 and LC50 were calculated and the results showed this species mainly caught before length of maturity, and the mass populations have not sufficient opportunity to reproduction. The mean of egg diameter for black mouth croaker were calculated at 533±103. Linear model of Fecundity= 9597.6TL-233880 was calculated for length-fecundity relationship . Results of feeding showed lantern fishes (65%), shrimps (11%), Japanese threadfin bream (13%) and the other fishes (11%) were the main feeding regime of black mouth croaker. This species was carnivore, the food prefect mainly consisted of lantern fishes (57.7%) and shrimps (28.2%). The vacuity index (87.7 %) indicated this spices was low appetite fish. Total length range was 18 to 47.5 cm with mean length of 28.7 cm, and the class of 23-24 cm was the most frequent length in fishing ground. The length-weight relationships in A. nibe were calculated for female and male W= 0.0121L2.9385 and W= 0.0075L3.0737 respectively, both have isometric growth. Growth parameters of L∞ and K were estimated 50 cm and 0.2 y-1 respectively. Parameters of t0, Tmax and Ǿ were calculated -0.7 year, 14 year and 2.69 respectively. This species have two recruitment period, and the peak of recruitment was occurred in May with 23.14 percent. Total mortality , natural mortality and fishing mortality rates were calculated 0.53 y-1, 0.46 y-1 and 0.07 y-1 respectively. Due to the calculated exploitation rate (0.13), it is appreciated the improvement of black-mouth croaker in the Oman Sea. Base on seasonal and monthly CPUE it was resulted the peak of fishing density were occurred in the winter. Results showed the main distribution of black-mouth croaker concentrated on the continental slope in 200 m depth, but these stocks move to deeper waters ( more than 200m) in warm season and extend to shallow waters (less than 200m) in winter.

Description: This paper aimed to investigate the fishery and biological characteristics of anchovy Kilka in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea from 2005-2007, including length and age structure ,Von Bertalanffy growth parameters, length and age at first capture, condition factor, sex ratio, natural and fishing mortality. The examination of catch data approved that Kilka population in the Caspian Sea have been declined a few years ago following entrance jellyfish Ctenophora Mnemiopsis leidyi. The greatest destruction of anchovy kilka catch was occurred while the catch of anchovy from 4250 tonnes in 2005 reached to 924 tonnes in 2007. The results showed that K value and L∞ calculated 0.375/year, 131.7mm, respectively. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality was estimated 0.49/year.The instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality and total mortality was 0.51 /year and 1/year, respectively. The Exploitation rate was calculated as 0.51. The length and age ranges restricted comparison to last decade and sharply decreased recruitment. In the past few years, the main reasons of disintegrates among anchovy Kilka stocks in the Caspian Sea were synchronized overfishing competitive anchovy Kilka with M. leidyi.

Description: Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries and are distributed along the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Using a logbook on small pelagic fisheries, a GIS-based environmental modeling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of anchovy and sardine in relation to environmental variables. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was applied to provide a preliminary view of the relationships between fish presence/absence and environmental variables. Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) indicated the presence/absence of fish was related to distance from the nearest coast, depth, sea surface Chlorophyll-a, and SST. Results of the EFH showed that sardine is concentrated in specific areas of more favorable conditions, such as north of the Persian Gulf and all areas of the northwest of the Oman Sea. However, EFH of anchovy showed a more widespread distribution, occupying most of the north-west of the Oman Sea coastal waters, south of Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormoz as well as the Parsian district in the north of the Persian Gulf. In this study, it seems that the anchovy showed the probability of presence in the areas with more distance from the coastal waters. However, the EFH probability presences of sardine were predicted for near coastal water and obviously, shallower waters. Due to the development of small pelagic fisheries, it is highly recommended to investigate anchovy and sardine fishing possibility in areas with high EFH prediction probability.

Description: Age structure of the Caspian Sea anchovy kilka, Clupeonella engrauliformis, was estimated for the first time by back-calculation methods. Otolith growth and the rate of increment in anchovy kilka were examined to determine whether otoliths could be used to back calculate body sizes at various life stages. Sampling was carried out on commercial fishing vessels board along the Iranian coast in 2007. The age structure of the samples ranged from 2 to 7 years old which was dominated by the third year class (38.6%). The largest fish measured was 137.2mm fork length. The relationship between fork length (FL) and otolith radius (OR) was described by the following equation: FL=13.77+ 82.78*OR (r2=0.92). Three proportional back-calculation methods, Fraser-Lee, Whitney & Carlander and Dahl-Lea models, were compared by using data sets of anchovy kilka otoliths, and we validated back calculation by comparing them with observed lengths. Back calculated lengths generally corresponded well with observed lengths in anchovy kilka age classes. Variance of the back calculated length data obtained from three models indicated no significant difference (P〉0.05).

Description: The Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta, Cuvier, 1817) is one of the commercial small pelagic fish in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. In the current research, feed preference index (FP), fullness index (FI), and stomach contents of Rastrelliger kanagurta were evaluated to assess the quantity and type of feed habits. A total of 573 specimens were collected randomly from Bandar - Abbas and Qeshm Island fishing sites from November 2011 to October 2012. The minimum and maximum total lengths were 13.9 and 35.5cm, respectively with the highest frequency in length group of 24- 26cm. Results showed that 21.3% of stomachs were full, 44.5% were semi-full and 34.2% were empty. Planktons and fish were the main and random feed items of this species respectively. Fullness index and Vacuity index for this species were calculated 21.3 and 34.2, respectively. Stomach contents analysis revealed that phytoplankton (66%) and zooplankton (34%) form the main feed of Rastrelliger kanagurta. Among the phytoplankton, Bacillariophyceae (86%) was the dominant feed followed by Cyanophyceae (8%) and Dynophyceae (6%). Copepods (88%) were dominant zooplanktonic feed items. Encrasicholina punctifer was the only bony fish observed. Maximum and minimum of GaSI index were estimated 2.57 and 1.12 in October and February, respectively. Condition factor and relative guts length were calculated 1.76 and 2.38, respectively. The results indicated that this fish is a relatively frugal species which consumes plankton as the main feed.

Description: Otoliths are considered as very useful structures of fishes for various studies. This investigation aimed to compare the morphometric parameters between the right and left otoliths of male and female specimens of four species of the fishes belonging to the family Carangidae from the northern Persian Gulf. The morphometric parameters such as weight, length, width, area and perimeter of sagittal otoliths were measured and compared between males and females. The relationships between otolith morphometric parameters (length, width, weight) and fork length were also examined. According to the results from independent sample t-test, significant differences were found in length, width, and area of otoliths between males and females of Carangoides malabaricus, whereas no significant differences were found for three other species. The otolith weight of Carangoides coeruleopinnatus and Megalaspis cordyla were significantly different between left and right otoliths (p〈0.05). Likewise, significant differences were found in the otolith area of the right and left otoliths of Carangoides. coeruleopinnatus (p〈0.05). Furthermore, no significant differences were found in the shape indices including form factor (FF), roundness (RD), aspect ratio (AR), circularity (C), rectangularity (R) and elipticity (E) between the right and left otoliths. The results suggest that the length and weight of sagittal otoliths are likely suitable indicators for fish fork length in all studied species.
