Notes: In addition to symmetry rotations (Σ = 1), lattices may admit coincidence-site-lattice (c.s.l.) rotations of various degrees of coincidence, Σ. The conditions for the occurrence of c.s.l, rotations are formulated in general terms by introducing the metric matrix of a lattice. When all lattices are considered, it is found that there are 4Σ possible values for the angle of rotation which give rise to a degree of coincidence Σ. These angles have cosines which are integral multiples of 1/2Σ. A particular lattice admits only some of these c.s.l, rotations. Cubic lattices are discussed in detail and it is shown that the number of permissible rotation angles for each odd value of Σ is approximately 3.414 × √Σ. Conversely, a particular rotation angle originates a c.s.l, of degree of coincidence Σ in those lattices which satisfy particular metric conditions. Finally, the effect of a uniform strain due to temperature or pressure changes is analysed, and it is shown that while symmetry rotations are invariant to this form of strain, only very few c.s.l, rotations are unaffected.

Notes: Orientation relationships between two crystal lattices are frequently specified in terms of parallel directions and planes in each lattice. The corresponding matrix, relating the vector bases of the lattices, can be obtained by a general method involving the metric matrices of the two lattices and the crystallographic indices of parallel planes and directions. Equivalent matrices can be defined by changing the lattice bases: different selections of the invariants of such matrices are indicated. Finally, criteria for choosing the 'best' matrix relating the two lattices are discussed in the context of phase transformations and of interfacial structure.

Notes: Tilt and twist components are determined for cubic bicrystals meeting at a planar boundary. It is shown that any boundary is nearly either a twist or tilt boundary, but the distinction between the two types is, in some cases, ambiguous.

Notes: A matricial theory of coincidence-site and displacement-shift-complete (DSC) lattices of arbitrary dimension is developed. Vector bases for these lattices can easily be determined from particular factorizations of the matrix defining the relative orientation. Various properties of the two lattices are derived, including the reciprocity relations. The general conditions for coincidence and the problem of coincidence in sublattices of lower dimension are also discussed.

Notes: The specification of the boundary between adjacent crystals of the same solid is discussed. It is shown that for planar boundaries the minimum number of parameters required is nine. A convenient choice of the grain boundary parameters is indicated, and their effect on the boundary structure exemplified.

Notes: A crystallographic interpretation of the elementary divisor theorem applied to square integral matrices is presented. The concept of a least multiplier of a rational square matrix is introduced and its properties are derived from the theorem. These topics are relevant in the formulation of a general theory of coincidence-site lattices.
