In:  Supplement to: Blaauw, Maarten (2010): Methods and code for 'classical' age-modelling of radiocarbon sequences. Quaternary Geochronology, 5(5), 512-518, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.quageo.2010.01.002
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Age–depth models form the backbone of most palaeoenvironmental studies. However, procedures for constructing chronologies vary between studies, they are usually not explained sufficiently, and some are inadequate for handling calibrated radiocarbon dates. An alternative method based on importance sampling through calibrated dates is proposed. Dedicated R code is presented which works with calibrated radiocarbon as well as other dates, and provides a simple, systematic, transparent, documented and customizable alternative. The code automatically produces age–depth models, enabling exploration of the impacts of different assumptions (e.g., model type, hiatuses, age offsets, outliers, and extrapolation).

Vegetation History and Archaeobotany, 23(1), 75-86, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00334-012-0390-y
    Publication Date: 2023-12-19
Description: The number of well-dated pollen diagrams in Europe has increased considerably over the last 30 years and many of them have been submitted to the European Pollen Database (EPD). This allows for the construction of increasingly precise maps of Holocene vegetation change across the continent. Chronological information in the EPD has been expressed in uncalibrated radiocarbon years, and most chronologies to date are based on this time scale. Here we present new chronologies for most of the datasets stored in the EPD based on calibrated radiocarbon years. Age information associated with pollen diagrams is often derived from the pollen stratigraphy itself or from other sedimentological information. We reviewed these chronological tie points and assigned uncertainties to them. The steps taken to generate the new chronologies are described and the rationale for a new classification system for age uncertainties is introduced. The resulting chronologies are fit for most continental-scale questions. They may not provide the best age model for particular sites, but may be viewed as general purpose chronologies. Taxonomic particularities of the data stored in the EPD are explained. An example is given of how the database can be queried to select samples with appropriate age control as well as the suitable taxonomic level to answer a specific research question.

Description: Continuous sediment profiles were taken from ravine slopes at the Nesseltalgraben site in the Northern Calcareous Alps (SE Germany, 47.6567°N 13.0467°E, 560-582 m a.s.l.) in October 2016. The profile consists of fine-grained lacustrine-palustrine sediments overlain by several metres of glacifluvial gravels and lodgement tills of the Last Glacial Maximum and underlain by a diamicton. High-resolution (2 mm steps) element counts (Ca, S, Si, K, Ti, Mn, Fe, Zn, Rb, Sr, Zr) were obtained with an XRF core scanner (Itrax, Cox Analytical Systems, Sweden). Organic geochemistry (total organic and inorganic carbon, total nitrogen, total sulphur) was analysed with an elemental analyser (Euro EA, Eurovector, Germany), grain size with a laser diffractometer (Beckman-Coulter LS 200). The sediment profiles were compiled to a composite record of 21 m length. The age model bases on 29 radiocarbon analyses of macroscopic terrestrial plant remains (byrophytes, plant debris, monocots, wood, and twigs) and a previously discovered paleomagnetic anomaly assigned to the Laschamp event. The age model covers the period 59 to 29.6 ka cal BP and assigns the record to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3. The sediment record shows rapid changes in lithology, sedimentology, and geochemistry related to Dansgaard-Oeschger climatic events.
