Notizen: Electrochemical techniques are applied to a study of selected intrinsic physical properties (independent of dopant) of polyacetylene, (CH)x. Electrochemical voltage spectroscopy (EVS) is used to characterize the energies of charge injection and removal for both cis-(CH)x and trans-(CH)x. The difference in charge injection and ejection potentials is shown to give a direct measure of the approximate semiconductor band gap and the results are compared with similar data from optical measurements. Charge injection and ejection potentials are used to define the redox potentials of (CH)x and are used in conjunction with equilibrium potential measurements at varying oxidation or reduction levels of polyacetylene to present a unifying concept to the electrochemistry of (CH)x.

Notizen: The temperature-dependent optical spectra of the major insulating forms of polyaniline—the fully reduced leucoemeraldine base, half-oxidized emeraldine base (EB), and fully oxidized pernigraniline base (PNB)—and of two oligomeric model compounds for polyaniline are reported. All three forms of the polymer possess a ∼3.8 eV optical absorption assigned to a transition from the valence band to a narrow π* conduction band; in all cases this transition shifts to higher energy and weakens with increasing temperature, T. The oxidized forms also exhibit transitions at ∼2 eV; in EB, this absorption feature has previously been assigned to a "molecular exciton'' and is found to increase in energy with increasing T. In PNB, the observed ∼2.3 eV transition is correlated with the expectation of a Peierls dimerization gap in this half-filled band system; in contrast to the ∼2 eV transition in EB, this optical transition energy decreases with increasing T in PNB. These observations are for the most part understood by a simple model which accounts for the steric repulsion between the constituent phenyl rings of the polymer chain. The dependence of the steric potential on ring angle is anharmonic, giving rise to thermal expansion of the average phenyl ring-torsion angles and a concomitant reduction in the bandwidth and average energy of the valence band; the observed thermochromic behavior is generally consistent with these changes in electronic structure. The potential role of other conformational changes—rod-to-coil transitions, order–disorder transitions, bond-length order changes, and structural isomerizations—is discussed.

Notizen: We have fabricated unilayer electroluminescent devices from soluble poly(p-pyridine) (PPy). The solubility of PPy in weak acids allows direct spin casting of the polymer films. The electroluminescence spectrum peaks at 2.5 eV (497 nm) corresponding to white light weighted towards the blue end of the spectrum. The photoluminescence spectrum peaks at 2.35 eV (530 nm). The operating voltages of the devices ranged from 4 to 12 V with current densities of 6 to 8 mA/mm2. We compare our devices with similar blue emitting devices based on poly(p-phenylene). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The first solid-state heterojunction device involving two conducting organic polymers has been fabricated from polyacetylene, (CH)x and p-doped poly(N-methylpyrrole), (PNP). Its electronic properties can be modified by chemically partly reducing or partly oxidizing the PNP. The junction has been characterized by J-V studies and by preliminary photovoltaic measurements.

Notizen: The performance of polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) having the configuration Al/MEH–PPV/ITO, where MEH–PPV=poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene) has been improved by light iodine doping of the emissive MEH–PPV polymer layer whereby the turn-on voltage is reduced and the external quantum efficiency is increased by an order of magnitude. It differs from nondoped MEH–PPV LEDs in that light emission is observed in both forward and reverse bias modes. It is believed that the mobility of the I3− anions in the (MEH–PPV)x+y(I3)xy− species formed on doping the MEH–PPV compensate for injected charges at the electrodes, thus reducing the electron and hole injection barriers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
