Abstract: This book and its 2 sister books (Volumes 2 and 3) of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering (HEE) series have been designed to serve as a mini-series covering agricultural and green biotechnologies. It is expected to be of value to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, to designers of sustainable biological resources systems, and to scientists and researchers. The aim of these books is to provide information on treatment and management of agricultural, pharmaceutical and food wastes and to serve as a basis for advanced study or specialized investigation of the theory and analysis of various integrated environmental control and waste recycle systems. Volume 1 covers topics on: treatment and management of livestock wastes; waste treatment in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry using green environmental technologies; vermicomposting process for treating agricultural and food wastes; the impacts of climate change on agricultural, food, and public utility industries; innovative PACT activated sludge, CAPTOR activated sludge, activated bio-filter, vertical loop reactor, and PHOSTRIP processes; agricultural waste treatment by water hyacinth aquaculture, wetland aquaculture, evapotranspiration, rapid rate land treatment , slow rate land treatment, and subsurface infiltration; production and applications of crude polyhydroxyalkanoate-containing bioplastic from agricultural and food-processing wastes; optimization processes of biodiesel production from pig and neem seeds blend oil using alternative catalysts from waste biomass; making castor oil a promising source for the production of flavor and fragrance through lipase mediated biotransformation; and waste treatment and minimization in baker's yeast industry.

Notes: : Ion flotation is the term used to describe a process in which there is an initally homogeneous solution which becomes heterogeneous after the addition of an oppositely charged surfactant due to the reaction between the surfactant and specific ion(s); thus, insoluble complexes are formed. These insoluble complexes will then attached to the bubbles passing through the solution and thus leave in the foam phase. The performance of the continuous ion flotation process for the removal of haft lignin from water was investigated intensively using liquid flow rates, gas flow rates, feed locations and solution height as operational variables. The interrelationships among these physical parameters were studied and discussed. A dimensionless operational chart was established for process control. Results demonstrate that ion flotation is an effective process for removing lignin from water, provided that a quaternary ammonium salt, such as cetyldimethylbenzyl-ammonium chloride or the like, is used as a collector. At optimum operational conditions, higher than 0.95 fractional removal of lignin can be achieved.

Notes: Resonant transmission of light has been observed in symmetric Fibonacci TiO2/SiO2 multilayers, which is characterized by many perfect transmission peaks. The perfect transmission dramatically decreases when the mirror symmetry in the multilayer structure is deliberately disrupted. Actually, the feature of perfect transmission peaks can be considered as general evidence for dielectric multilayers with symmetric internal structure. It opens a unique way to control light propagation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : A two-phase titration method was developed and evaluated to determine the concentration of linear alkylate sulfonate (LAS), branched-chain alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS), dishwashing detergents, and laundry detergents in water. This method is capable of quantitatively determining anionic surfactants in either fresh water or saline water and it is therefore superior to the widely used Methylene Blue Method. To simplify the titration method for adoptation to remote field utilization, a field test kit was developed. This test kit includes only a separatory funnel, a titration burette, a set of liquid measuring apparatus, and some chemicals. Emphasis was placed on compactness of the kit and simplicity in the test manipulation, so that its operation can be performed by relatively unskilled wastewater monitoring personnel.

Notes: [Auszug] The metal deposit formed in electrodeposition from acidified FeSO4 aqueous solution film (Fig. 1) and its evolution process (Fig. 2) are studied using an in situ observation method. Unlike the fractal-like or dendritic patterns observed previously1 6JO, in our experiment the neighbouring tips ...
