    Description: There is an international commitment to develop a comprehensive, coordinated and sustained ocean observation system. However, a foundation for any observing, monitoring or research effort is effective and reliable in situ sensor technologies that accurately measure key environmental parameters. Ultimately, the data used for modelling efforts, management decisions and rapid responses to ocean hazards are only as good as the instruments that collect them. There is also a compelling need to develop and incorporate new or novel technologies to improve all aspects of existing observing systems and meet various emerging challenges. Assessment of Sensor Performance was a cross-cutting issues session at the international OceanSensors08 workshop in Warnemünde, Germany, which also has penetrated some of the papers published as a result of the workshop (Denuault, 2009; Kröger et al., 2009; Zielinski et al., 2009). The discussions were focused on how best to classify and validate the instruments required for effective and reliable ocean observations and research. The following is a summary of the discussions and conclusions drawn from this workshop, which specifically addresses the characterisation of sensor systems, technology readiness levels, verification of sensor performance and quality management of sensor systems.

    Description: Highlights: • Unique 30-years data of currents and temperature below 1000 m in the Madeira Basin. • Inter-decadal and long term changes were examined between 1000 m and the bottom. • Temperature increase by 0.03 ± 0.01 °C/year (1000 m) and 0.02 ± 0.02 °C/year at 1600 m. • No significant changes at 3000 m and 5000 m at long-term scale. • The currents and kinetic energy increased in the entire water column over 30-years. Abstract: Data from the deep-sea mooring Kiel 276 (33 N, 22W), 5300 m water depth in the northeast Atlantic, was used to investigate the temporal variability of temperature and currents below the main thermocline (1000 m, 1600 m, 3000 m, 5000 m) in the 30-year period (between 1980 and 2009). Daily averages were the basis to assess the temperature and currents changes, as well as kinetic energy, from annual to decadal and long-term scales. Below the main thermocline, no seasonal signal was identified for both, temperature and currents, during the 30 years. The record-length linear temperature trends at 1000 m and 1600 m are 0.03 ± 0.01 °C year−1 and 0.02 ± 0.02 °C year−1, respectively. The mean currents also intensified within the decades in the entire water column, and as a consequence, the mean kinetic energy increased. The fluctuating kinetic energy increased on a decadal scale only at 1000 m, as a possible consequence of the increase in the strength of Mediterranean Water lenses (MEDDIES) that crossed the mooring site. During the period 2001–2009, six MEDDIES crossed the Kiel 276 site, in addition to the 10 MEDDIES identified earlier during the previous 20 years, between 1980 and 2000 (Siedler et al., 2005). The integral time scales are of the same order in all depths (between 30 to 40 days), indicating that events occur on similar time scales, with mesoscale signals dominating and being present within the entire water column.

    Description: We report evidence for active hydrothermal venting along two back-arc spreading centers of the NE Lau Basin: the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center (FRSC) and the Northeast Lau Spreading Center (NELSC). The ridge segments investigated here are of particular interest as the potential source of a mid-water hydrothermal plume (1500–2000 m depth) which extends more than 2000 km across the SW Pacific Ocean dispersing away from an apparent origin close to the most northeastern limits of the Lau Basin. Our results indicate the presence of at least four new hydrothermal plume sources, three along the FRSC and one on the NELSC, the latter situated within 150 km of the maximum for the previously identified SW Pacific regional-scale plume. However, TDFe and TDMn concentrations in the southernmost FRSC plume that we have identified only reach values of 19 and 13 nmol/L and dissolved 3He anomalies in the same plume are also small, both in relation to the SW Pacific plume and to local background, which shows evidence for extensive 3He enrichment throughout the entire Lau Basin water column. Our results reveal no evidence for a single major point hydrothermal source anywhere in the NE Lau Basin. Instead, we conclude that the regional-scale SW Pacific hydrothermal plume most probably results from the cumulative hydrothermal output of the entire topographically restricted Lau Basin, discharging via its NE-most corner.
