Abstract The preparation of 2,3,7,8-tetrahydroxyphenazine (THP) is described and its applicability to the spectrophotometric determination of traces of metals has been studied. Ge(IV) forms with THP 1∶2, 1∶3 and 1∶4 complexes. The composition mainly depends on pH and the amount of THP. Sb(III) forms predominantly a 1∶1 complex with THP. The molar absorptivity at 538 nm is 40,000 l×Mol−1×cm−1. The 1∶2 complex of Ga(III) with THP (absorption maximum at 548 nm) shows an extraordinary high absorptivity (about (120,000). Zr(IV) reacts with THP even in 2 N HCl solution. At pH 1.0 predominantly a 1∶1 complex is formed. At 585 nm and pH 0.85 Beer's law is obeyed within the range of 5–15 nMol Zr/ml (apparent molar absorptivity 36,300).
