Description: This paper is not subject to U.S. copyright. The definitive version was published in Marine and Petroleum Geology 28 (2011): 561-577, doi:10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2010.03.016.
Description: The BPXA-DOE-USGS Mount Elbert Gas Hydrate Stratigraphic Test Well was an integral part of an ongoing project to determine the future energy resource potential of gas hydrates on the Alaska North Slope. As part of this effort, the Mount Elbert well included an advanced downhole geophysical logging program. Because gas hydrate is unstable at ground surface pressure and temperature conditions, a major emphasis was placed on the downhole-logging program to determine the occurrence of gas hydrates and the in-situ physical properties of the sediments. In support of this effort, well-log and core data montages have been compiled which include downhole log and core-data obtained from the gas-hydrate-bearing sedimentary section in the Mount Elbert well. Also shown are numerous reservoir parameters, including gas-hydrate saturation and sediment porosity log traces calculated from available downhole well log and core data.

Notes: Abstract— The effects of dry hydrogen, moist air, distilled water and hydrazine environments on the fatigue crack propagation behavior of 2021 aluminum alloy have been investigated over a wide range of growth rates spanning about six orders of magnitude. Environmental interactions in the intermediate and near-threshold crack growth regions are shown to be associated with different fracture characteristics and mechanisms. Scanning Auger and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of fracture surface corrosion deposits revealed that oxide induced crack closure phenomena, which considerably influence the near threshold corrosion fatigue behavior of low strength steels and some aluminum alloys, are not of importance for the present 2021-T6 aluminum alloy. The mechanistic aspects of environmentally influenced fatigue behavior of the alloy are discussed in the light of hydrogen embrittlement, chemical reactions and crack closure concepts.

Notes: Frankfurters were made in a nonvacuum bowl chopper. Batter samples were taken after 2, 6, 9, 12, and 15 min of chopping and after 30, 60, and 90 min of cooking. Both raw and cooked batter samples were fixed in solutions of glutaraldehyde and paraformaldehyde, OsO4, and then embedded in SPURR (low-viscosity resin). Light microscopy (toluidine blue-stained sections) was used to identify the location, appearance and structures of major components; electron microscopy (lead citrate-stained sections) was used to determine ultrastructural changes. During chopping, muscle fibers were reduced in size but some remained intact; lipid droplets were reduced in size with only a portion of them being surrounded by a protein interface and collagen fibers were somewhat dispersed but were otherwise unaltered. More observable changes occurred during cooking than during chopping. At the end of cooking (90 min) collagen fibrils had lost their banding pattern; some lipid droplets retained their protein interface and myofilaments changed from a fibrous to a granular appearance.

Notes: Abstract Aluminium-lithium-beryllium alloys are a group of low-density, high-modulus materials that potentially have technological importance in aerospace structures. In this paper, a series of such alloys has been produced using rapid solidification processing via melt spinning. The microstructures of the alloys have been investigated in the as-melt-spun condition, after consolidation and heat treatment to peak hardness, and after tensile testing in the heat-treated condition. In particular, changes in the size and distribution of primary beryllium particles and Al3Li precipitates are described after consolidation and processing. The mechanical properties of the alloys in the heat-treated condition are also presented.

Notes: Abstract Contaminants discharged to an estuary usually become associated with the near surface brackish waters and on an ebb tide these waters form a plume which streams away from the estuary mouth. As the plume mixes downwards, a localised region of minimum dilution may form at the sea-bed, depending on the rates of transverse and vertical mixing. A modelling study of the outflow from the Tees estuary suggests that regions of minimum dilution at the sea-bed could occur between 1.5 and 4.0 km from the estuary mouth, the latter corresponding to a tide of spring range. An estimate for the Humber outflow on a spring tide indicates that a similar impact region could occur at a distance of some 9 km from the entrance to the estuary. At the Tyne and Wear estuaries, the vertical mixing of contaminants is likely to be too slow for the regions of minimum dilution to form before the discharge plumes are cut off from the estuary mouths by the reversal of tidal flow.
