Notizen: Abstract The uncorrelated component analysis (UCA) of a stationary random vector process consists of searching for a linear transformation that minimizes the temporal correlation between its components. Through a general analysis we show that under practically reasonable and mild conditions UCA is a solution for blind source separation. The theorems proposed in this paper for UCA provide useful insights for developing practical algorithms. UCA explores the temporal information of the signals, whereas independent component analysis (ICA) explores the spatial information; thus UCA can be applied for source separation in some cases where ICA cannot. For blind source separation, combining ICA and UCA may give improved performance because more information can be utilized. The concept of single UCA (SUCA) is also proposed, which leads to sequential source separation.

Notizen: Summary This study investigated the effect of Atropellis canker,Atropellis piniphila (Weir) Lohman and Cash, and stalactiform blister rust,Cronartium coleosporioides Arth., on the bending strength and stiffness of lumber from lodgepole pine,Pinus contorta Dougl. var.latifolia Engelm. The modulus of rupture, was unaffected by either disease. However, the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of lumber from infected trees, as determined by the Cook Bolinders and static bending tests, was significantly reduced from those of healthy trees. This impact should affect the use of lumber from infected trees when serviceability criteria govern the design of a structure. Should MOE-based, machine stress-rating of lumber become standard in the future, there may be an adverse, stress-related impact of these diseases on lumber value.

Notizen: Summary This paper elucidates the need to consider the effect of volume on brittle material strengths when these strengths are used in a strength theory. Specifically, Weibull weakest-link theory has been implemented with the Tsai-Wu strength theory to predict the ultimate load carrying capacity of a center point off-axis bending member made from Douglas-fir laminated veneer. Weibull theory has been used in two distinct ways to account for size effects needed to evaluate brittle material strengths (ie. tension perpendicular and parallel to grain, and shear) for the strength criterion. The analytical methods assume linear elastic, plane stress states and have been described and evaluated using probability theory as a framework. Analytical results are in reasonable agreement with experimental findings substantiating the techniques proposed herein.

Notizen: Abstract Wood composites produced using aspen flakes have displayed interaction between manufacturing variables and stress-strain consolidation of these mats. This study brings an original approach to the process of wood composites within the analytical nonlinear continuum mechanics based model, developed to predict the consolidation of wood mats during part of the hot-pressing cycle. Consolidation of wood flake mats occurred principally during the closing of the press when the loose mat underwent uniaxial compression along its perpendicular direction. Forming parameters such as mat thickness, and pressing parameters such as press closing rate, were accounted for in a combined viscoelastic model with creep. The stress-strain consolidation model was applied to different formed mat structures using random and oriented layout of flakes, and although slightly higher values were obtained with the model regarding the viscoelastic behavior of the loose mat, the creep model showed a very good agreement with the experience data. These results within a continuum approach, are significant in the manufacturing of wood composites as they would enable optimization of manufacturing processes by integrating the specific conditions of the forming process of wood mats into the pressing strategy.

Notizen: Summary The within member variation of tensile strength parallel to grain in nominal 38×89 mm No. 2 Spruce-Pine-Fir lumber has been experimentally evaluated. Window analyses yielded the within member tensile strength cumulative probability distributions of lumber segments with various lengths. Semivariogram and regression analyses have been performed to characterize the spatial correlation of the tensile strength of lumber. The results indicate that the tensile strength values within a piece of lumber separated by a distance greater than 1.83 m can be considered statistically independent.

Notizen: Summary A model has been developed for the within member variation of tensile strengths parallel to grain in nominal 38 × 89 mm No. 2 Spruce-Pine-Fir lumber. Tensile strength data from two modulus of elasticity matched groups were considered. Model parameters obtained from data group 1 were used to generate tensile strength profiles of lumber 6.10 m long. Within member tensile strength cumulative probability distributions of the simulated data were evaluated by window analyses. The spatial correlation of the simulated data were evaluated by semivariogram and regression analyses. Good agreement was obtained between model predictions and test results of both groups.
