Notes: In this paper we study the dynamics of a system consisting of a heavy box sinking vertically into water. The classic configuration is due to Scott Russell who used the sinking box in 1844 to illustrate the formation of a solitary wave in a long rectangular tank. We use a combination of computer simulation and experiment to clarify details of the wave formation and the dynamics of the sinking box. We find that as the box sinks the water is heaved up to form both the solitary wave and a reverse plunging wave which forms a vortex. This vortex follows the wave down the tank. The computer simulation uses the particle method smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) which allows us to follow the formation of the waves and the dynamics of the box. The simulation results are in satisfactory agreement with the experiments. We derive scaling relations for the velocity of the box and for the amplitude of the solitary wave. These scaling relations are in reasonable agreement with the experiments and the simulations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Chandrasekhar and Prendergast have established a result which has been assumed to imply that axisymmetric stars with an internal toroidal magnetic field should have zero external poloidal field. By considering mildly singular functions, the range of solutions is increased, and models can then be constructed which have toroidal and poloidal fields in the interior and a non-zero, external, poloidal field. Both the magnetic field and its associated current are continuous everywhere.

Notes: Abstract The Modern Laplacian Theory of the origin of the solar system (Prentice 1978) assumes a non-dissipative model of supersonic turbulence, and the existence of stable rings left behind during the contraction of the proto-sun. We show by numerical simulation that the turbulence is highly dissipative and the rings unstable. As a result of the instability, the rings spread and interact with the proto-sun. The rings therefore cannot form in the way Prentice proposed.

Notes: The introduction of more rigorous regulations aimed at controlling the use of sulphonated dyestuffs and dyestuff intermediates has pointed to the need for screening methods for the presence of these involatile compounds. Although much work has been caried out recently on the mass spectrometric behaviour of these compounds, it has been concerned principally with the production of molecular weight information using novel ionization methods rather than with any attempt to obtain structurally diagnostic fragment ions. In this mass spectrometric investigation of a range of naphthalene sulphonic acid salts, positive-ion and negative-ion fast-atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra have been obtained and FAB-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) has been used to acquire spectra (daugher-ion, parent-ion and neutral-loss) in an attempt to develop a useful screening method. On known compounds, best results were found when using a negative-ion neutral-loss scan to detect the loss of 64 mass units (corresponding to loss of SO2). This was confirmed by successful use of this scan to screen a sample of sulphonate residues.

Notes: The design and use of an RF-only collision-cell ramp generator is described. The generatio controls the collision energy voltage applied to the RF-only collision cell in a hybrid mass spectrometer of BEqQ geometry. The generator enables the collision-cell voltage to be increased or decreased in a linear ramp, over the full 500 V available. The start/stop functions of the ramp are synchronized under data system control to the scan of the quadrupole mass analyser. The collision-induced dissociation spectra so produced show an increase in the product ion abundance.

Notes: The results of thin layer chromatography/mass spectrometry (TLC/MS) and thin layer chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (TLC/MS/MS) experiments are described. Spectra from the analytes were obtained directly from the absorbent without the need for extraction prior to analysis by mass spectrometry. These results illustrate the added specificity that the tandem mass spectrometer can afford in the detection and characterization of a range of compounds separated by TLC.
