    Notes: Monochromatic synchrotron radiation was used to excite selectively core electrons of the carbon and fluorine atoms in carbon tetrafluoride and silicon and fluorine in silicon tetrafluoride. The fragmentation processes were examined using time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The mass spectra show the distribution of ions collected in coincidence with low and high energy electrons. Distinct changes in the mass spectra with atomic site of excitation and photon energy are observed. The observation of F2+ ions following fluorine 1s excitation in SiF4 provides significant evidence for a "valence bond depopulation'' mechanism involving the formation of a localized, two-hole final state that persists on the time scale of fragmentation. In contrast, no F2+ was observed for CF4, which indicates that fragmentation for this molecule is more characteristic of a delocalized two-hole state.

    Notes: The time evolution of the donor phosphorescence following pulsed laser excitation is used to monitor direct energy transfer at 16 K between the triplet states of donor molecules (4,4'-dibromobenzophenone) and acceptor molecules (1,4-dibromonaphthalene) doped into polymer films (polystyrene). The correspondence between the experimental data and the theoretical description provided by Inokuti and Hirayama is not satisfactory. Better agreement between theory and experiment is obtained by introducing an improved configuration average, which is valid at higher concentrations, and a nonuniform density of acceptor sites, which is a consequence of the polymer structure. The nonuniform density reveals a fundamental difference between the properties of a small molecule glass and a polymer glass. This difference can be quantified by the effective fractal dimension, which equals 3 for the small molecule glass and is found to equal 2.2 for this system.

    Notes: The symmetry of excited states reached by photoexcitation of K-shell electrons of N2 and O2 is identified from the fragmentation anisotropy. For each molecule, ion yield excitation spectra were obtained at 90°, 54.7°, and 0° relative to the axis of soft x-ray polarization. The degree of polarization of the synchrotron radiation was determined experimentally. From this determination and the angular dependence of the ion yield, the photoabsorption anisotropy parameter β is obtained as a function of photon energy. Variations in the β spectra are discussed in terms of previously assigned spectral features and are compared with other experimental results. A comparison also is made with theoretical calculations, which are available for the case of N2.

    Notes: The fragmentation of acetone following excitation in the region of the oxygen K edge was studied by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. By comparing mass spectra obtained using various photon energies ranging from below to well above the threshold for oxygen 1s excitation, it is found that methyl ion production is strongly associated with excitation of an oxygen 1s electron. None of the excitations generated significant yields of atomic oxygen or carbon ions.

    Notes: Electron energy spectra characterizing the relaxation of molecular oxygen from different core hole excited states are reported. By using monochromatic synchrotron radiation, spectra are obtained with excitation at the π* and σ* resonances and at various energies above the ionization threshold. The spectra obtained with excitation above threshold are very similar and result from Auger decay. The spectra obtained at the σ* resonance result from spectator autoionization, and those for the π* resonance result from both spectator and participator autoionization. The σ* resonance is broadened by spectral congestion, and the autoionization spectra indicate the presence of three components. Configurations and states produced by the electronic decay are identified, and a correlation between spectator screening and term values is documented.

    Notes: The observation of an anomaly in the optical luminescence excitation spectrum of oxygen in the region of the oxygen K edge is reported. Dispersed luminescence spectra were obtained for x-ray excitation at the pi and sigma resonances, at the anomaly, and in the continuum. These spectra indicate enhanced production of O2+2 ions at both the sigma resonance and at the anomaly. The anomaly thus is attributed to a shake-up or shake-off state associated with an antibonding sigma molecular orbital of oxygen. This work also demonstrates that optical luminesence spectra provide state-specific information about the products of core hole excitation and relaxation.

    Notes: Studies of the fragmentation of nitrous oxide using time-of-flight mass spectroscopy following excitation by monochromatic synchrotron radiation are reported. The consequences of core electron excitation of all three atoms to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital are described. Clear changes in the mass spectra with the atomic site of excitation are observed. These changes can be understood qualitatively in terms of the atomic populations, which govern the Auger decay channels, and the overlap populations, which determine the bond structure, of the valence molecular orbitals. Mass spectra correlated with Auger electrons are very similar to mass spectra correlated with events producing low energy electrons. This result may indicate that the selectivity of the primary Auger decay process is not affected by additional excitation events.

    Notes: The native oxide, thermally oxidized and hydrofluoric acid rinsed surfaces of Si(100) have been characterized by photon stimulated ion desorption (PSD), and both photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies. The only species detected by PSD were H+ ions with different kinetic energies. Low kinetic energy H+ ions were detected only from the HF rinsed surfaces presumably arising from scission of Si—H bonds while higher kinetic energy ions attributed to adsorbed hydrocarbon dissociation were observed for all of the surfaces.
