Notizen: Porous high-density polyethylene specimens were implanted in the femurs of mongrel canines. At the end of the residency period (3 or 6 months), the animals were sacrificed and the implants were retrieved. The work-of-fracture of the implant specimens was then determined using the technique of Tattersall and Tappin. The work required to fracture a specimen in three-point bending by controlled crack propagation through a triangular cross section was obtained directly from the load-deflection curve. The area of the resulting fracture surface was measured by macro-photographic techniques, and the work-of-fracture was calculated as work per unit area. The implants were subsequently sectioned and examined microradiographically to determine the extent of bone ingrowth. Bone specimens adjacent to the implants and porous high-density polyethylene controls (no ingrowth) were also tested to determine their work-of-fracture. The results showed that bone adjacent to the implant specimens had a higher work-of-fracture than normal medial, canine femoral bone and was not appreciably different from the composite. The work-of-fracture of porous high-density polyethylene was not significantly increased by an increase in bone infiltration, and this anomalous behavior was attributed to a degradation of the polyethylene during implant residence. Control studies supported this hypothesis.

Notizen: There are two major fire processes, an understanding of which is essential for effective fire safety design: (1) the conditions under which a combustible material may become involved in flaming combustion, and (2) the rate at which such a material, once involved, will provide an output of heat, smoke, toxic gases, etc., which can endanger people and property. The first process may be regarded as covering both ignition and spread of fire on materials; its complement is the way in which fire may become extinguished. It is necessary for such processes to bring in a characteristic of the basic combustion reaction which, directly or indirectly, expresses the reactivity of the combustion process. Thus pilot ignition is usually associated with an approximate surface fuel temperature. More basically, it is associated with a critical flow rate of volatiles and a critical heat loss from the flame, the latter being influenced by ambient oxygen and temperatures conditions as well as heat lost and gained by the fuel itself. The most important factor governing the production of dangerous product is the rate at which volatiles first (fuel controlled fires) and later air (air controlled fires) are fed into the flames. The reactivity is of less importance, although it may be one of the factors which control combustion efficiency. In general, the more efficient is the combustion the more heat is produced, but the less smoke and toxic gases are produced. Some of the main advances in the above areas are reviewed in this paper.

Notizen: The curing reaction of tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) with diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, and ESR spin trapping techniques. A mechanism has been proposed, and the cure kinetics has been obtained at 177°C. The major conclusion is that cure proceeds mainly through chain extension, while crosslinking occurs through the reaction of hydroxyl groups with epoxides, resulting in formation of ether linkages.

Notizen: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) fabric was degraded under rapid heating conditions and the solid residue characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy. Fabric samples with and without flame retardant were pyrolyzed in air or nitrogen and spectra-recorded after various percentage weight changes. Dominant species included carboxylic acid end groups and linear anhydrides, based on infrared absorbances before and after chemical treatments of the residues. Vinyl benzoate end groups were clearly precluded, as were cyclic anhydrides. Diffuse reflectance spectra were also compared with spectra obtained by transmission infrared on conventional KBr discs prepared from the same residue. The former technique was shown to be superior to the pressed disc method for the tough residues obtained by thermolysis.

Notizen: The thermal decomposition of poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been studied using a conventional dynamic thermogravimetric technique in a flowing air atmosphere at several heating rates between 0.1°C and 100°C/min. The dynamic thermogravimetric analysis curve and its derivative have been analyzed using a variety of analytical methods reported in the literature to obtain information on the kinetic parameters. The degradation was found to be a complex process composed of at least three overlapping stages for which kinetic values can be calculated. The best approaches to solving the kinetics of the decomposition were found to be the multiple heating rate techniques of Friedman and Ozawa. The Friedman technique gave apparent activation energies (kJ/mol) for the three main decomposition stages of 122.2 ± 12.9, 201.0 ± 8.5, and 141.9 ± 12.7, with a value of 85.5 ± 10.2 for the prestage at low conversion. The Ozawa method, meanwhile, gave values of 101.6 ± 2.6, 182.6 ± 7.4, 142.5 ± 3.8, and 158.4 ± 26.1 for the prestage.

Notizen: Blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) exhibit extremely poor mechanical properties owing to the incompatibility of these two polymers. Such blends, however, would result from the reprocessing of certain carbonated beverage bottles. Addition of small amounts of a commercially available triblock copolymer greatly improved the ductility of these incompatible blends, whereas addition of an ethylene-propylene elastomer did not. The results are discussed in terms of phase morphology and interfacial adhesion among the various components.

Notizen: Due to the high chain transfer to monomer, the homopolymerization of methacrylamide yields polymers of extremely low molecular weight. On partial alkaline hydrolysis, the viscosities of these polymers in aqueous solution are much inferior to those of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). However, polymethacrylamides prepared by room temperature, persulfate-initiated polymerization in the presence of small amounts of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide demonstrate posthydrolysis reduced viscosities in 0.01% NaCl comparable to typical commercial HPAM materials.

Notizen: Five to six million molecular weight polyacrylamide and polymethacrylamides of comparable post-alkaline hydrolysis viscosities were imidized by dissolution and heating in 6N HCl. After alkaline hydrolysis, the imidized polymers demonstrated significantly better retention of viscosity to 2% NaCl than did similar partially hydrolyzed polymers. Viscosities in 0.01% NaCl and resistance to shear were not markedly affected by this modification. It is assumed that this improved performance in brine is the result of chain stiffening due to intrachain imide rings.
