Description: The present paper shows that the reflected ion at a supercritical quasi-perpendicular shock wave can excite a purely growing mode propagating parallel to the ambient magnetic field. To discuss the ion heating by such an unstable mode, the self-consistent quasi-linear kinetic equation is solved with the assumption that the present purely growing mode is the dominant unstable mode in the system. In the quasi-linear analysis of the instability, two particular cases are considered: the case of low initial ion beta and that of a high initial ion beta.

Description: The stability of a spherical shell ion distribution function against low-frequency hydromagnetic waves is discussed by relaxing the assumption of parallel propagation which was imposed in the preceding discussions published in the literature. It is found that Alfven waves as well as magnetosonic waves with oblique angles of propagation can be excited by a shell distribution. In the present analysis, the emphasis is placed on the case in which the thickness of the spherical shell is small.

Description: The amplification of a high-frequency transverse electromagnetic wave by a relativistic plasma component, via the synchrotron maser process, is studied. The background plasma that supports the transverse wave is considered to be cold, and the energetic component whose density is much smaller than that of the background component has a loss-cone feature in the perpendicular momentum space and a finite field-aligned drift speed. The ratio of the background plasma frequency squared to the electron gyrofrequency squared is taken to be sufficiently larger than unity. Such a parameter regime is relevant to many space and astrophysical situations. A detailed study of the amplification process is carried out over a wide range of physical parameters including the loss-cone index, the ratio of the electron mass energy to the temperature of the energetic component, the field-aligned drift speed, the normalized density, and the wave propagation angle.

Description: The weakly relativisitic dielectric tensor for a system of electrons comprised of cold and energetic populations, embedded in a neutralizing background, is reformulated in terms of an infinite series representation in powers of lamba = alpha ck(perpendicular)/omega (c), where alpha-squared is a parameter proportional to the average thermal energy of the energetic electrons, k(perpendicular) is the perpendicular component of the wave vector k, and omega (c) is the electron gyrofrequency. The energetic electrons are assumed to have a loss-cone feature in the perpendicular momentum space. The present formalism can be used in the problem of cyclotron maser as well as more general gyroharmonic maser (i.e., multiharmonics) emissions resulting from weakly relativistic loss-cone electrons. This is because, unlike the previous theories in which certain approximations such as the single-harmonic approximations are made, the present formalism retains contributions from the entire harmonics.

Description: Detailed properties of the classical hydromagnetic Alfven wave and the fire-hose instability, driven by an excess in the parallel energy are well understood in the nonrelativistic regime. In this brief communication, the analysis is extended to the fully relativistic regime. The analysis is carried out for fully relativistic bi-Maxwellian distributions of electrons and ions (or positrons). It is shown that the relativistic effect has a nonnegligible effect on the wave and stability properties of the low-frequency modes under certain conditions.
