Notes: Abstract Nuclear behavior during ascus development inChaetomium globosum was studied with the use of acetocarmine and aceto-orcein staining techniques. The chromosome behavior, including centriolar bodies and asynchronous disjunction of chromosomes, agreed with the basic pattern reported in Ascomycetes (Olive, 1965). The haploid chromosome complement of this strain appeared to be 6.

Notes: Abstract The somatic nuclear division ofChaetomium globosum was studied utilizing acetocarmin and aceto-orcein techniques. Nuclear division in hyphae of this species was found to be mitotic, but diversity in morphology and division configuration was noted. Identifiable chromosomes, the metaphase plate, and the chromosome bridge were commonly seen. A combination of extremely small nuclei, difficulties in staining, multinucleate conditions, and protoplasmic streaming in hyphae presented difficulties for these studies. Contradictory views are held on the structure of the nucleus, presence of the centriolar body, and other karyological features as described byFinley (1970)Rabinow &Bakerspigel (1965). Nuclear division structural details in a few other fungal species such as the centriolar body, spindle apparatus, and nuclear membrane disassociation have been examined by electron microscopy (Motta, 1969;Ichida &Fuller, 1968;Namboodiri &Lowry, 1967). The present study and the previous report onC. globosum (Hsu, Yu &Volz, 1972) presents comparative data for a NASA Appollo 16 MEED Mycology investigation now in progress.

Notes: Abstract Four fungal species were selected as the test systems for the Microbial Ecology Evaluation Device (MEED) of Apollo 16. Fungal cells were exposed to various quantitative and qualitative spaceflight parameters then returned for postflight analyses. Survival rates and phenotype numbers varied according to exposure parameters. Additional studies underway will further identify the spaceflight changes.

Notes: Abstract Vegetative nuclear division inTrichophyton terrestre Durie & Frey was studied utilizing the aceto-orcein squash technique. Nuclear division included: no directional preference to the hyphal axis; longitudinal splitting of daughter nuclei; and a haploid chromosome count of four. Interphase and prophase nuclei were morphologically similar to those of higher plants, however, various degrees of chromosome condensation and elongation were noted. Spindle pole bodies were prominent at metaphase.

Notes: Abstract Antibiotic-decontaminated and untreated conventional mice were inoculated intragastrically with 107 viable cells of Sporothrix schenckii to compare the incidence of gastrointestinal (GI) colonization. In control mice, S. schenckii was completely eliminated from the GI tract by 12 h post-inoculation. Antibiotictreated mice also failed to become colonized with this fungus, however, higher population levels of Sporothrix cells remained in the GI tract for a longer period of time before being eliminated. The ability of S. schenckii to disseminate from the lumen of the bowel to infect other organs was also tested. Results indicate that the gastrointestinal tract is not a portal of entry into the host for S. schenckii.

Notes: Abstract Littoral zone marine sediment and sand, spiny lobster and conch were examined for yeasts. Nineteen yeast species were found to exist in varying abundance. Previous studies in the series examined the marine fungi (17), fresh water fungi (16), and keratinophilic fungi (15) of Abaco Island, The Bahamas.

Notes: Abstract Hydrochloric acid leaching of two activated carbons is shown to remove the majority of the iron incorporated in them. The subsequent adsorption behaviour of carbons from wood and coconut char starting materials differed, allowing inferences on the nature and distribution of the active sites.
