    Notizen: We have examined in detail the formation of surface relief structures in azobenzene polyesters formed by polarization holography with orthogonally circularly polarized laser beams. We show that it is possible to separate the contribution to the diffraction efficiency into an anisotropic part and a surface relief part by examining the polarization content of the first order diffracted beam. By studying the dynamics of the growth of the grating, we show that the gratings due to anisotropy and surface relief appear at the same time. Atomic force microscopic investigations of the film after irradiation reveal a strongly polarization dependent surface relief pattern. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Azobenzene polymers and oligomers show intriguing surface relief features when irradiated with polarized laser light. We show through atomic force microscopic investigation of side-chain azobenzene polymers after irradiation through an amplitude mask that large peaks or trenches result depending on the architecture of the polymer. Extensive mass transport over long distances has been observed, paving the way for easy replication of nanostructures. We also show that it is possible to store microscopic images as topographic features in the polymers just through polarized light irradiation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Instant photography, epitomized by Polaroid films is characterized by the rapid appearance of an image after exposure. We describe here an instant off-axis holographic process, characterized by exposures as short as 5 ns and an instant display process, not requiring any wet chemical processing. The holograms are made in a side-chain azobenzene polyester and can be erased through a thermal treatment of the film enabling the film to be reused. Significantly, an atomic force microscopic scan of the film shows a strong surface relief after the 5 ns exposure paving the way for a cheap, mass replication of the holograms using a micromolding technique. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Atomic force and scanning near-field optical microscopic investigations have been carried out on a polarization holographic grating recorded in an azobenzene side-chain liquid crystalline polyester. It has been found that immediately following laser irradiation, a topographic surface grating structure appears. The time development of the grating structure was followed by atomic force microscopy for 20 h by repeatedly scanning the same area of the film. The grating structure disappears after a few hours and a pronounced increase of surface roughness has been found to take place. A near-field optical microscopic scanning of the grating reveals, however, that the bulk of the film remains optically anisotropic. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We report novel biphotonic holographic storage of text and gratings on unoriented films of a side-chain liquid crystalline polyester capable of high density storage and complete erasure. The holograms have a typical size of 1 mm. The recording utilizes unusual photochemistry involving azo dye molecules. We believe that this technique would have a great potential in the recording of thousands of holograms in a two-dimensional plane, as for instance in text retrieval systems and in the fabrication of high density interconnects in optical neural networks.

    Notizen: Abstract Long-term, high resolution holographic storage has been achieved in side-chain liquid crystalline polyesters with high diffraction efficiency. The information can be completely erased by heating the film to about 80°C. The modular architecture of the polyesters permits a varition in the length of the main- and side-chains and the substituents of the azo chromophore. Each of these has a profound influence on the storage properties of the polyesters. In this article, we examine the influence of the length of the side-chains, the probe-beam-polarization dependence of the observed signal on the interface and the crystalline vs. amorphous nature of the films for optical storage.

    Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we present new results describing the spatial frequency response in bacteriorhodopsin (bR), immobilised in gelatin films. It is shown that the spatial frequency response is flat, as compared to bR contained in solution form. An experimental investigation into the photoinduced anisotropy of bR films is also presented. It is shown that the anisotropy can be induced using two wavelengths (632.8 nm and 454 nm) and is dependent on the pH of the gelatin matrix, the 454 nm laser polarisation and the 454 nm pump power. The mechanisms producing the anisotropy are briefly discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract Radiative lifetimes for excited states in La ii, Ce ii, Pr ii, Nd ii, Sm ii, Yb i, Yb ii, and Lu ii have been determined by means of the beam-foil technique or the zero-field level-crossing method. The lifetimes for La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Yb are shorter than those computed by summing the transition probabilities of Corliss and Bozman by a factor of up to ~5. The large discrepancies between the abundance of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm in the solar photosphere and in meteorites are eliminated or greatly reduced if the abundance determinations of the solar photosphere are based upon the gf values of Corliss and Bozman, corrected for by the present lifetimes.
