    Description: A detailed study of the charge composition of heavy solar cosmic rays measured in the January 25, 1971 solar flare including differential fluxes for the even-charged nuclei from carbon through argon is presented. The measurements are obtained for varying energy intervals for each nuclear species in the energy range from 10 to 35 MeV per nucleon. In addition, abundances relative to oxygen are computed for all the above nuclei in the single energy interval from 15 to 25 MeV per nucleon. This interval contains measurements for all of the species and as a result requires no spectral extrapolations. An upper limit for the abundance of calcium nuclei is also presented. These measurements, when combined with other experimental results, enable the energy dependence of abundance measurements as a function of nuclear charge to be discussed. It is seen that at energies above about 10 MeV per nucleon, the variations of abundance ratios are limited to about a factor of 3 from flare to flare, in spite of large variations in other characteristics of these solar events.

    Description: The paper presents the plans of the Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications for the Shuttle/Spacelab missions. It is reported that the current program contains dedicated low-gravity mission (Spacelab 3 mission) and several minor missions planned for flight during 1980-1982. It is noted that these missions have either Materials Processing or Earth viewing emphasis. Finally, several representative experiments are used to illustrate the Applications Spacelab Program, such as the Materials Experiment Assembly (MEA), and the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Measured by Spectroscopy (ATMOS) experiment.

    Description: The Shuttle offers an exciting new way to perform space experimentation, the 'sortie mode.' This mode allows experiments to be performed in the payload bay with subsequent return of the hardware, including data in the form of film, tapes, or samples, to the investigators. In pursuit of the objective of providing easy and routine access to space, a number of methods of participation in the sortie mode are being made available by NASA. These methods provide varying degrees of NASA funding, data rights, and flexibility. At one extreme is the 'Small, Self-Contained Payload' where a 60-pound payload can be flown on the Shuttle for a cost of $3,000. Alternately, one can propose an experiment in response to an 'Announcement of Opportunity' (AO) and receive substantial funding support for development and conduct of a major Spacelab experiment. These methods and others are discussed.

    Description: Major and minor NASA astrophysical research efforts in the near-term are outlined, together with projections of direction for future projects. The Space Telescope is being readied for a 1986 launch and will feature an f/24, 2.4 m aperture, an MgF2 mirror with better than 1/60 wavelength accuracy and will be diffraction-limited in the UV. Pointing accuracy is designed to be 0.007 arcsec for 24 hr. Optical, spectrometric, and photometric equipment will be included. Around 1990, Shuttle-based missions will include an IR telescope and a subarcsec solar surface imaging device. A free-flying X-ray observatory (AXAF) is planned and will include a sensitivity that exceeds that of the HEAO-2 spacecraft by two orders of magnitude. Instruments are under development for higher resolution UV, gamma-ray, and IR studies. In-orbit interferometry is being studied and will depend on in-orbit assembly and servicing of stable structures with segmented optics.

    Description: An overview of the planning for future NASA Spacelab missions is presented. The planned missions through 1983 indicate a vigorous and growing Spacelab payload program. The new capabilities of the Spacelab mode of experimentation suggest new payload management techniques. A technique which is characterized by increased mission planning flexibility and discipline autonomy is discussed in detail.
