Notes: The experimental investigation showed that the absorption of the 441.6 nm He-Cd+ laser line by the He-Cd positive column in the cataphoretic confinement sections used in hollow-cathode discharge He-Cd+ lasers is relatively low (∼0.1% per a few-cm-long He-Cd positive column). Such a low absorption should not decrease the 441.6 nm output power of the hollow-cathode discharge He-Cd+ lasers more than a few percent. Estimates show that the Cd*2 molecules may be responsible for this absorption.

Notes: A cw He-Kr+ laser was excited with a capacitively coupled transverse radio frequency discharge. The laser was operated in a simple 40-cm active length alumina oxide tube which ends off via ceramic glass transitions in Brewster windows. Transformation of the laser discharge tube impedance to the 50 Ω output resistance of the rf source and symmetrization of the rf voltage were performed by a special matching network. cw lasing was obtained at 469.4, 458.3, 438.7, and 431.8 nm. The output power of all lines amounts to 35 mW at an input power of 600 W. The rms noise of the laser intensity did not exceed 0.6%.

Notes: The helical magnetic instability of arcs is investigated experimentally at a long low current H2 arc in a tube of 20 mm diam. The measurements are compared with theoretical results given in a preceding paper [Phys. Fluids 30, XXXX (1987)] in which a first order homogeneous differential equation for the helix amplitude was derived from the basic differential equations. Confirmation is achieved for the critical external axial magnetic field which just destabilizes the arc. It amounts to only a few gauss. Agreement is also found for the growth rate of the instability in both cases of destabilization by an external magnetic field and by the self-magnetic field. The measured growth rates have an order of magnitude of 1000 sec−1.

Notes: A straight arc column operated in a cylindrical tube changes its shape into a helical form if the strength of the arc current, the gas pressure, or a superimposed axial magnetic field exceed marginal values. The helical arc is described by the electromagnetic equations in an electrostatic approximation and by the balances of mass, momentum, and energy. The critical nonlinear term is the Lorentz force. The equations are solved by linear perturbation theory. A first order differential equation is deduced for the helix amplitude from which the stability limit of the cylindrical arc and the growth rate of the helical instability can be evaluated. The ratio of the destabilizing and stabilizing terms in the equation is determined by a dimensionless number, the Maecker number, which comprises integral properties of the arc and properties of the gas.

Notes: Abstract Experimental and theoretical investigations have been performed to determine the thermal conductivity of hydrogen in the temperature range between 2000 and 7000 °K. For this purpose the radial temperature distributions for various currents and theE-I-characteristic of a low current wall-stabilized hydrogen arc have been measured. In the dark region of the arc outside the bright core the temperature and the thermal conductivity between 2000 and 4500 °K were found by means of the schlieren technique. The electron temperature in the core of the arc results from spectroscopic measurements. The gas temperature has been calculated with a formula, derived from the kinetic theory of gases. Assuming a constant collision integralQ eH 11 the radial distribution of electric conductivity has been calculated according to Langevin's formula. The valueQ eH 11 =30·10−16 cm2 results by comparing the integrated conductance with the measured one. Since now the radial distribution of power input and the temperatures are known, the thermal conductivity between 4500 and 7000 °K can be determined as well. The total course of the heat conductivity shows a strong peak at the temperature of 3740 °K characteristic for the dissociation process.

Notes: Abstract The onset current of the helical instability of wall stabilized arcs can be determined by a theoretical model from a dimensionless function which is only dependent on the power input and a factor containing the gas properties and the arc conductance. The model describes the onset current of the instability in hydrogen and nitrogen as function of the tube diameter and of the pressure. Questions of restabilization are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The diffraction theory of image construction has been used, in the case of a differential interferometer employing a Wollaston prism, to derive the position of the interference fringes in dependence upon the phase object and the prism position. This procedure is not only more correct, but proves also to be simpler than the corresponding geometric-optical treatment. An example is presented in which the fringe shift resulting from a symmetrical gas flow has been used to evaluate the gradient of the optical path perpendicular to the rotational axis of symmetry.

Notes: Abstract Arc roots at which marked vaporization occur are unstable and therefore in general non-stationary. High speed photography of arc roots using various electrode materials in Ar, SF6, and N2 shows that the appearance of the arc roots results from the superposition of several phenomena. On graphite cathodes in Ar it was possible to observe these phenomena separately by varying the cooling of the electrodes. It is shown that distinctions must be drawn between the real current transfer region with relatively weak vaporization, vaporization from the electrode surface outside this region and vaporization from within the body of the electrode. The energy-balance determined experimentally confirms the theoretical prediction that the energy for strong vaporization of the cathode is supplied by an ioncurrent.

Notes: Abstract By the use of graphite cathodes in argon the normally unstable arc root exhibiting strong vaporization of the cathode can be made stationary with a well defined, axially symmetrical vapour jet. Spectroscopic measurements of the C2 molecular bands give a vapour temperature between 4000 K and 5000 K. On strongly heated electrodes the hot plasma is to some extent hindered by the relatively cold vapour: this results in a displacement, supported by magnetic forces, of the arc root onto colder areas and thus in instability.
