Notes: [Auszug] Nine giant gravity cores8 (GGC; diameter = 10cm) were selected from among 42 cores recovered in 1981 from the slopes of the Sierra Leone Rise by RV Endeavor cruise 66. These nine cores range from water depths between 2,931 m and 5,104m (see Table 1). Their stratigraphical integrity was documented ...

Notes: [Auszug] Sapropels are black, organic-rich muds with unusually high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide and iron hydroxide15. These sediments seem to be deposited in a particular sequence13'14, reflecting the transition from open-marine sedimentation (hemipelagic) to that indicative of stagnant conditions. ...

Notes: Abstract Within Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotical theory, twodifferent kinds of creative metaphorical reasoning inscience can be identified. One of these, the buildingof remainder metaphors, is especially important forcreating new scientific models. We show that theconveyor belt metaphor provides an excellent examplefor Peirce's theory. The conveyor belt metaphor hasrecently been invented in order to describe theoceanic transport system. The paradigm of the oceanicconveyor belt strongly influenced the geosciencecommunity and the climate change discussion. Afteridentifying structures of metaphorical reasoning inscience (section 2), these structures are examined insection 3 for the conveyor belt metaphor in the fieldof oceanography. Finally, concluding remarks are givenin section 4.

Notes: Abstract A general morphometric procedure is described that organizes collections of microfossil outlines according to their shape. It involves representing the greatest proportion of variation observed among a collection of shapes by the least number of different shapes. Since these are determined as empirical orthogonal shape functions—eigenfunctions—of the observed shapes, the procedure is termed eigenshape analysis. Observed shapes are arranged and their shape differences systemized by reference to these determined eigenshape functions. The well-known ecophenotypic shape variation with latitude exhibited by the Pleistocene planktonic foraminifer Globorotalia truncatulinoides (d'Orbigny)serves as an example.

Notes: Summary We present a simple, deterministic energy balance model. The model is designed to represent the atmospheric component of the coupled atmosphere-ocean system. It is a one dimensional, global model with time and space resolutions of one year and 10° of latitude respectively. The model predicts the surface air temperature and estimates the surface freshwater flux diagnostically. The coupling between the atmospheric model and an ocean model is accomplished by heat and freshwater fluxes at their interface. The heat flux is calculated according to the difference in the surface air temperature and ocean surface temperature, while the freshwater flux is estimated from the latent heat transport in the atmosphere by a diagnostic equation. Two parameterizations for the latent heat transport are proposed, which distinguishes the two versions of the model. Before proceeding with interactive runs, we study the behaviour of the model in a decoupled mode. Some experiments with initial conditions altered and external forcings changed arė carried out to investigate the sensitivity and stability of the model. In particular, the influence of the ice-albedo feedback on model solutions is examined. The results of these experiments may be helpful both in understanding the characteristics of the model and in interpreting results when the model is coupled to an OGCM.

Notes: Summary In five cases of determining beryllium in meteorites it was found that, under the conditions and temperatures used to decompose silicates with a mixture of HF-HClO4, a part of the beryllium could not be traced because there obviously exist one or more beryllium compounds which are volatile under these conditions and thus escape the determination. The volatile beryllium compounds were expelled by heating the samples in a quartz tube at 400° C in a current of nitrogen and were condensed in a U-tube cooled by liquid nitrogen. From this condensate the beryllium acetylacetonate could be extracted and the beryllium could be determined by flameless AAS. In the chondrite Bjurböle, the content of volatile beryllium was larger than the non-volatile one. The volatile beryllium compounds we observed show the same chemical behaviour as the unidentified volatile beryllium compounds found by Black and Sievers in terrestrial samples.
